The US Navy has announced a significant $123-million contract awarded to BAE Systems aimed at modernizing the USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), the 48th vessel in the Arleigh Burke-class of destroyers.
Commissioned in January 2006, the USS Forrest Sherman is named in honor of former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Forrest Sherman, renowned for being one of the youngest individuals to hold that prestigious position and for his crucial contributions during the Second World War.
Currently stationed at Naval Station Norfolk, the destroyer plays a vital role in missions involving the US 5th Fleet, operating frequently in the Middle East and participating in exercises with NATO allies in European waters.
The contract encompasses the ship’s Depot Modernization Period (DMP), a critical overhaul intended to maintain the vessel’s operational readiness and extend its lifespan. This process will take place at BAE’s shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia, and will involve several enhancements. Key aspects of the modernization include underwater hull preservation, engineering space optimization, upgrades to command-and-control systems, and renovations of crew cabins.
In addition to these upgrades, BAE Systems will provide essential labor, equipment, evaluations, and facilities to support the destroyer’s maintenance cycle scheduled for fiscal year 2026. The DMP is set to commence in February 2026. However, there are options within the contract that could increase its overall value to $139 million.
The anticipated completion date for the modernization project is in early 2027, with the contractual timeline extending potentially through August of that year, subject to federal orders.
David Thomas, Jr., vice president and general manager of BAE Systems Maritime Solutions Norfolk, expressed enthusiasm about the modernization effort, highlighting its significance for the team and emphasizing that it will ensure the USS Forrest Sherman can continue to deliver exceptional service for many years to come.
