The US Navy is revitalizing its renowned MK 38 close-in weapon system for the fourth time, marking a significant milestone with its first caliber increase in over three decades. The latest iteration, known as the MK 38 MOD 4, replaces the existing 25mm gun with the more powerful Bushmaster II 30mm main gun from Northrop Grumman. This upgrade not only enhances firepower but also incorporates advanced air-burst munitions designed to improve effectiveness against a range of threats.
In addition to the caliber upgrade, the MK 38 MOD 4 boasts modernized targeting capabilities. The introduction of electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sights, along with a revamped operator console, significantly enhances the weapon’s accuracy and situational awareness. This transformation into a “smarter” weapon system enables the MK 38 to better counteract evolving modern threats faced by naval forces.
As the US Navy continues to adapt to the dynamic landscape of maritime threats, the MK 38 MOD 4 represents a crucial step forward in ensuring that fleet vessels remain equipped with cutting-edge defensive systems. The integration of these advanced technologies underscores a commitment to maintaining readiness and effectiveness in an increasingly complex operational environment.
