US State Department Approves $8.5 Billion Patriot Missile Sale to Denmark

The US State Department has given the green light for a potential sale worth $8.5 billion of sophisticated Patriot air defense systems, along with the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS), to Denmark. This deal includes a significant assortment of defense materials, such as 36 Patriot MIM-104E Guidance Enhanced Missiles-Tactical (GEM-T) and 20 Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (PAC-3 MSE) missiles.

The GEM-T missiles are engineered to intercept various threats, including aircraft, cruise missiles, and select ballistic projectiles. In contrast, the PAC-3 MSE is specifically designed for advanced ballistic missile countermeasures and is equipped to handle emerging hypersonic threats. The operational range for the GEM-T systems is between 70 to 160 kilometers (approximately 43 to 100 miles), depending on the specific target. The PAC-3 MSE, on the other hand, can engage ballistic threats at distances ranging from 35 to 60 kilometers (22 to 37 miles) and aerodynamic targets such as aircraft and cruise missiles from 60 to 100 kilometers (37 to 62 miles).

Central to the proposed purchase is the IBCS, which amalgamates data from various sensor inputs to create a comprehensive, integrated air defense framework. This system will coordinate the defense efforts by selecting the most suitable interceptor for a given threat.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency emphasized that the impending sale is a strategic step for Denmark, enhancing its ability to tackle both current and forthcoming threats, thereby bolstering Denmark’s defense responsibilities towards NATO allies and partner nations.

Principal contractors involved in the potential transaction include major defense companies such as RTX Corporation, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman. However, the approval from the State Department is pending further endorsement from Congress.

This potential acquisition aligns with Denmark’s ongoing air defense modernization initiatives. Recent efforts include the procurement of the VL MICA short-range air defense system from France’s MBDA and the IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defense system from Diehl Defence. For long-range air defense, Denmark is currently evaluating options between the US-made Patriot system and the Franco-Italian SAMP/T NG system.

Denmark’s air defense framework faced a significant setback when it decommissioned its Hawk air defense system in 2004, resulting in a notable gap in its ground-based air defense capabilities. Despite the State Department’s approval, Danish defense analyst Hans Peter Michaelsen cautioned that the likelihood of Denmark acquiring the Patriot system remains uncertain, primarily due to a lengthy delivery timeline exacerbated by high global demand, particularly stemming from the situation in Ukraine and an overall surge in initiatives aimed at enhancing air defense systems amid rising security threats.
