Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command, recently addressed personnel of the Eastern Fleet, commonly referred to as the โSunrise Fleet,โ during a formal gathering in Visakhapatnam. This event underscored the fleetโs crucial role in maintaining a high operational tempo while ensuring a secure maritime environment in the Bay of Bengal and surrounding areas of the Indian Ocean.
In his address, Vice Admiral Pendharkar commended the personnel for their unwavering dedication and professionalism, highlighting the Eastern Fleetโs significance as the โSword Armโ of the Eastern Naval Command. He acknowledged the ongoing security challenges in the maritime domain, urging the fleet to remain vigilant and ready to address any operational demands that may arise.
The Eastern Fleet has a rich history of active engagement, notably taking part in joint operations such as Operation Talwar during the 1999 Kargil conflict. The fleet continues to play a pivotal role in tackling modern threats such as piracy and illicit traffickingโissues recognized globally, notably in a 2008 United Nations report on maritime security.
In addition to discussing broader operational themes, Pendharkar engaged with the personnel on various topics, including maritime awareness, operational challenges, training, motivation, wellness, and healthy living. He emphasized the importance of personal safety as well as cyber and road safety, calling on the fleet to maintain focus and strive for excellence in their professional duties. His remarks are consistent with the Indian Navyโs broader vision articulated by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R. Hari Kumar in 2023, which envisions the Navy as a โCombat Ready, Credible, Cohesive, and Future Readyโ force, capable of protecting India’s maritime interests at all times.
Headquartered in Visakhapatnam, the Eastern Naval Command oversees naval operations along Indiaโs eastern seaboard, which includes the states of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu. This command is strategically vital, supporting two nuclear-powered Arihant-class submarines and serving as the submarine operating authority under the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief. The recent gathering in Visakhapatnam reaffirmed the Indian Navyโs commitment to safeguarding the nationโs maritime security in the face of evolving regional dynamics.
