Vice Admiral Suraj Berry, a distinguished figure in the Indian Navy, has officially retired after an impressive 38-year career marked by significant achievements and leadership. On this momentous occasion, he paid tribute to the nation’s heroes by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country.
Vice Admiral Berry was commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1987, and has since established himself as a specialist in Gunnery and Missile Warfare. He is a proud alumnus of the Naval War College in Rhode Island, USA, and his extensive experience at sea spans more than 19 years. During his career, he commanded a number of frontline warships including INS Nirbhik, INS Karmuk, INS Talwar, and most notably, he was the commissioning Commanding Officer of the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.
On shore, Vice Admiral Berry has played a pivotal role in major initiatives that have transformed the Navy. Notably, he was instrumental in the implementation of the Agnipath scheme, which aims to modernize the recruitment process, and in the historic decision to induct women sailors into the Navy, marking a significant shift in the Navy’s approach to human resource development.
As he lowered the Naval Ensign for the last time, Vice Admiral Berry reaffirmed his unwavering dedication to the nation and emphasized the importance of India’s maritime heritage as a fundamental element in the vision for Viksit Bharat 2047.
In a heartfelt message, the Indian Navy expressed its profound gratitude for his exemplary service and leadership, bidding him “Fair Winds and Following Seas” as he sets sail into the next chapter of his life.
