With Pakistan expanding its radar network, India must ensure that it has the necessary countermeasures to protect its airspace. Pakistan is building a new TPS-77 radar site in Chorr Cantonment, which is only 58 kilometers from the international border. The TPS-77 Multi-Role Radar (MRR) is a powerful radar system that provides military forces around the world with critical situational awareness and air traffic control capabilities.

TPS-77 Radar Family

Lockheed Martin’s AN/TPS-77 and AN/TPS-117 radars are part of the TPS-77 radar family. The TPS-77 MRR is a highly mobile version of Lockheed Martin’s successful TPS-77 product line, designed for ultra-low power consumption and transportability. The TPS-77 MRR is a mobile radar system that can be transported and installed in a variety of locations. It has a maximum detection range of up to 250 nautical miles and operates in the S-band frequency range (463 kilometers). In difficult environments, the radar employs advanced digital signal processing techniques to provide accurate target detection and tracking capabilities.

The TPS-77 MRR is capable of detecting and tracking a variety of airborne targets, including fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and missiles. It can also detect and track weather, which makes it useful for meteorological applications. The AN/TPS-77 radar is a mobile version of the AN/FPS-117. Both are three-dimensional, tactically transportable, 470-kilometer-range air surveillance radars. The two systems have an 80% similarity rate. However, unlike the AN/FPS-117, the AN/TPS-77 is easily transportable and deployable for global operations.

TPS-77 MRR In Pakistan

Pakistan has purchased TPS-77 MRR radar systems, which are multi-role radar systems capable of detecting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), monitoring low-level flight, warning tactical ballistic missiles, ground-based air defence, and maritime surveillance. In November 2021, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) deployed two new radar systems, including the TPS-77 MRR, to improve air defence monitoring.

Influence on India

India’s air defence capabilities may be impacted by Pakistan’s new TPS-77 radar installation. Pakistan’s new radar location may make it more difficult for India to carry out surprise assaults as it has been working to modernize its air defense system. Given the previous history of tensions between the two countries, this is especially worrisome.

TPS 77 Radar 3

During the airstrike on Balakot in 2019, Pakistan allegedly used its own radar systems to identify and engage Indian fighter fighters. But, Pakistan’s failure to notice India’s BrahMos missile misfire event in 2020 highlighted a hole in their radar coverage. It would be crucial for India to make sure it has the required countermeasures to secure its airspace as Pakistan expands its radar network.

The most recent action taken by Pakistan to build a second TPS-77 radar site highlights the value of cutting-edge radar technology in contemporary warfare. The TPS-77 MRR is a highly effective system that offers military forces all around the world essential situational awareness and air traffic control capabilities. The possible impact of Pakistan’s new radar location on India’s air defence capabilities is highlighted by the necessity for India to continue updating its air defence system and creating countermeasures to defend its airspace.
