Lightest Bulletproof Jacket: Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi) have created the world’s lightest bulletproof jackets, revolutionising army protection and fighting skills. These cutting-edge jackets are not only lighter than their predecessors, but they can also survive several rounds fired from AK-series rifles and select sniper rifles, indicating a considerable leap in military technology.
World’s Lightest Bulletproof Jackets for Indian Army
The new bulletproof jackets, the result of 15 years of research collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), have the potential to change how soldiers are equipped for war. These jackets are available in two versions, each with its own set of capabilities and characteristics to meet a variety of operating needs.
The initial model, which weighs only 8.2 kilogrammes, is designed to stop up to eight bullets fired from an AK-series rifle. This amazing feat of engineering not only improves soldier safety but also greatly reduces their load, allowing them to function more effectively and efficiently on the front.
The second type, weighing 9.5 kilogrammes, is intended to deflect up to six rounds fired by certain sniper rifles. This version demonstrates the adaptability of IIT-Delhi research by tackling various risks faced by soldiers in various combat circumstances. These jackets are a monument to the researchers’ dedication and ability in developing a technology that improves the safety of people who protect our nations.
The path to developing these ground-breaking jackets began in 2008 when an Army Major expressed a need for lighter bulletproof jackets. The jackets available at the time were made primarily of iron and weighed between 22 and 25 kilogrammes. Recognising the gravity of the issue, the researchers set out on a mission to revolutionise protective gear for soldiers, assuring their safety while allowing them to move freely.
Lightest Bulletproof Jacket: Composition
The new bulletproof vests are made of cutting-edge materials like polymer and ceramic. These materials not only provide great protection but also contribute to the lightweight design of the jackets, which is crucial for soldiers involved in dynamic and physically demanding combat scenarios. To confirm the jackets’ effectiveness, intensive testing was carried out, including the use of gas cannons to fire ballistic projectiles. These tests demonstrated the jackets’ capacity to survive bullets fired from AK-series weapons and certain sniper rifles, providing tangible proof of their effectiveness.
The amazing achievement of the IIT-Delhi research team has received formal certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards, cementing its position as a forerunner in improving troop protection. These lightweight bulletproof jackets exemplify the power of collaboration between academic institutions and defence organizations, illustrating how cutting-edge research can have a profound impact on national security and the lives of those in uniform.
