SCO’s Virtual Summit
According to a statement released by the SCO, the SCO Council of Heads of State will meet on July 4 and will be virtually presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Turkmenistan has also been invited as the Chair’s guest, as is customary at the SCO. The Secretariat and the SCO RATS will be represented, as will the heads of the two SCO Bodies. The heads of six international and regional organisations, namely the UN, ASEAN, CIS, CSTO, EAEU, and CICA, have also been invited.
“The Summit’s theme is ‘Towards a SECURE SCO’.” The Prime Minister coined the acronym SECURE at the 2018 SCO Summit, which stands for Security, Economy and Trade, Connectivity, Unity, Respect for Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity, and Environment.
“Under its Chairmanship, India has established new pillars of cooperation: Startups and Innovation; Traditional Medicine; Digital Inclusion; Youth Empowerment; and Shared Buddhist Heritage.” Furthermore, India has tried to strengthen people-to-people ties that honour our countries’ historical and civilizational linkages. These include “various socio-cultural events hosted by Varanasi as the first-ever SCO Cultural and Tourist Capital for 2022-23,” according to the announcement.
The time of India’s SCO Chairmanship has been one of intensive activity and mutually beneficial cooperation among Member States. In total, India has held 134 meetings and events, including 14 Ministerial-level meetings. India remains committed to playing a positive and constructive role in the organisation and looks forward to the conclusion of the SCO Summit.
India will hold the rotating presidency till September 2023. India took the presidency of the SCO in 2022, marking a key milestone in the country’s participation in regional cooperation and advocacy for an integrated neighbourhood.
