World Migratory Bird Day

  • World Migratory Bird Day on May 14 aims to draw attention to the issue of the well-being of migratory birds as they face problems of loss of habitat, climate change, poisoning, and illegal killing. Moreover, there is a need for protecting the habitat of the migratory birds which cross the national borders for various purposes including breeding, feeding, resting, and overwintering.
  • World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated on two peak days each year (the second Saturdays of May and October) to highlight the need for international collaboration to ensure the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats globally.
  • First held in 2006 to promote the conservation of migratory birds and to counteract the negative publicity they were receiving across the world, due to concerns about their role as potential vectors of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus subtype H5N1 – now commonly referred to as bird flu. Since then. World Migratory Bird Day has gained in popularity with over 2,000 events being organized in over 100 countries since the campaign’s inception.
  • The theme of this year is ‘Impact of Light Pollution on Migratory Birds’.

International Day Of Families

  • The International Day of Families is observed on 15 May every year. The Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 and reflects the importance the international community attaches to families.
  • The International Day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic, and demographic processes affecting families.
  • This year’s theme, “Families and Urbanization”, aims to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable, family-friendly urban policies.

International Day Of Living Together In Peace

  • The International Day of Living Together in Peace is held on 16th May every year since 2018. The UN General Assembly declared 16 May the International Day of Living Together in Peace, as a means of regularly mobilizing the efforts of the international community to promote peace, tolerance, inclusion, understanding and solidarity.
  • The Day aims to uphold the desire to live and act together, united in differences and diversity, in order to build a sustainable world of peace, solidarity and harmony.
  • The United Nations General Assembly decided to celebrate 16th May as the International Day of Living Together in Peace on 8th December 2017.
  • 2022 Theme: End racism. Build peace.

International Day Of Light

  • The International Day of Light (IDL) is celebrated on 16 May each year to mark the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by physicist and engineer, Theodore Maiman.
  • The day celebrates the role that light plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications, and energy to help achieve the goals of UNESCO – ‘education, equality, and peace.
  • This year’s celebration will focus on the ‘International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development 2022′.
  • The celebration of the International Day of Light will enable various sectors of society worldwide to get indulge in activities that display how science, technology, art and culture can help in achieving the goals of UNESCO i.e. building the foundation for peaceful societies.

World Telecommunication & Information Society Day

  • World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is an international day proclaimed in November 2006 by the International Telecommunication Union Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey, to be celebrated annually on 17 May.
  • The day had previously been known as ‘World Telecommunication Day to commemorate the founding of the International Telecommunication Union on 17 May 1865. It was instituted by the Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos in 1973.
  • The main objective of the day was to raise global awareness of social changes brought about by the Internet and new technologies. It also aims to help reduce the digital divide.
  • World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2022 Theme is “Digital technologies for Older Persons and Healthy Ageing“.

Vesak Day

  • 16 May: “Vesak”, the Day of the Full Moon in the month of May, is the most sacred day to millions of Buddhists around the world.
  • It was on the Day of Vesak two and a half millennia ago, in the year 623 B.C., that the Buddha was born.
  • It was also on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha attained enlightenment, and it was on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha in his eightieth year passed away.
  • The General Assembly In 1999, recognized internationally the Day of Vesak to acknowledge the contribution that Buddhism, one of the oldest religions in the world, has made for over two and a half millennia and continues to make to the spirituality of humanity.
  • This day is commemorated annually at the UN Headquarters and other UN offices, in consultation with the relevant UN offices and with permanent missions, which also wish to be consulted.

World Hypertension Day

  • World Hypertension Day (WHD) is a day designated and initiated by The World Hypertension League (WHL), which is itself an umbrella to organizations of 85 national hypertension societies and leagues.
  • The day was initiated to increase the awareness of hypertension. This was especially important because of the lack of appropriate knowledge among hypertensive patients.
  • The WHL launched its first WHD on May 14, 2005. Since 2006, the WHL has been dedicating May 17 of every year as WHD.
  • Theme Is “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer”

Over 18 Crore Ayushman Cards Issued

  • Over 18 crore Ayushman Cards have been issued under Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana ( AB- PMJAY ) so far.
  • The scheme is being implemented to provide health cover to the people.
  • Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya in a tweet said that the scheme has proved to be a boon for the poor people.
  • He said, under the scheme, more than 3 crore 20 lakh people have availed the  benefit of hospital facilities, and hospital admission amount to 37 thousand 398 crore rupees
  • AB-PMJAY was launched on 23rd September 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with an aim to provide health assurance of up to 5 lakh rupees per family per year for secondary and tertiary healthcare hospitalizations.

Bajaj FinServ’s Sanjiv Bajaj Takes Over As CII President

  • Bajaj FinServ Limited’s Chairman and Managing Director Sanjiv Bajaj have assumed the office of Confederation of Indian Industry, CII President for the year 2022-23.
  • During a meeting today, CII elected its new office-bearers and accordingly, Chairman and CEO of Hero MotoCorp Limited Pawan Munjal has taken over as CII President-Designate. Executive Vice Chairman of TVS Supply Chain Solutions R Dinesh has taken over as Vice President.
  • According to an official press release, Mr. Bajaj has been engaged with CII for many years. He had led CII National Committees on Insurance and Pensions and CII Taskforce on Fintech.

Finland In Favor For NATO Membership

  • Finland’s leaders said that they are in favor of rapidly applying for the NATO membership. It will pave the way for a historic expansion of the alliance. The move by Finland was announced by President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin. It means that Finland is all but certain to join NATO, though a few steps remain before the application process can begin. Neighbouring Sweden is expected to decide on joining NATO in coming days.
  • Mr Niinisto and Ms Marin in a joint statement said that NATO membership would strengthen Finland’s security. They said, as a member of NATO, Finland would strengthen the entire defence alliance. Finland shares a 1,340-kilometre land border with Russia.
  • Meanwhile, Russia said that Finland’s move to join NATO would not help stability and security in Europe.

ISSF Junior World Cup

  • Indian pistol pairs Esha Singh and Saurabh Chaudhary won the mixed team pistol gold at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany.
  • India’s Palak and Sarabjot Singh settled for the silver medal after losing to Esha and Saurabh 16-12 in the gold medal match. Ramita and Paarth Makhija also won silver in the 10m air rifle mixed team competition, going down 13-17 to the Polish pair of Julia Piotrowska and Wiktor Sajdak but not before making it three medals on the day.
  • In all, India has so far won 10 medals, including four gold.

Cricketer Andrew Symonds Dies In Road Accident

  • Andrew Symonds (9 June 1975 – 14 May 2022) was an Australian international cricketer, who played all three formats as a batting all-rounder. He was an important member of two World Cup winning squads.
  • Symonds played as a right-handed, middle order batsman and alternated between medium pace and off-spin bowling.
  • He was also notable for his exceptional fielding skills.
  • Symonds died in a single-vehicle car crash in Townsville, Queensland, on 14 May 2022 at the age of 46.

India Beat Indonesia 3-0 To Lift Thomas Cup Trophy

  • In Badminton, India created history as Indian men team beat 14 time Champions Indonesia by 3-0 to lift Thomas Cup Trophy in Bangkok.
  • World Championships medallist Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth and world number 8 doubles duo of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy produced memorable performances and won the tie in first three game in their respective draws. Sen gave India a 1-0 lead with a come-from-behind 8-21, 21-17, 21-16 win over world number five Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.
  • The Thomas Cup, sometimes called the World Men’s Team Championships, is an international badminton competition among teams representing member nations of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the sport’s global governing body. The championships have been conducted every two years since the 1982, amended from being conducted every three years since the first tournament held in 1948–1949.
