US Successfully Tested Lockheed Hypersonic Missile This Week

  • The U.S. Air Force successfully tested a Lockheed Martin Corp hypersonic missile this week, sources familiar with the efforts said on Wednesday, amid growing concerns Russia and China have had more success developing their own hypersonic weapons.
  • The U.S. Air Force successfully tested its Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) booster on Tuesday off the California coast, according to the sources. The ARRW is carried aloft under the wing of plane before it is launched toward its target. In previous tests, the weapon did not detach from the plane.
  • Hypersonic weapons travel in the upper atmosphere at speeds of more than five times the speed of sound, or about 6,200 km (3,853 miles) per hour.

LAUNCH OF Y – 3023 (DUNAGIRI)

  • Dunagiri, a Project 17A frigate, will be launched into the Hooghly river at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited, Kolkata on 15 Jul 22. Shri Rajnath Singh, Hon’ble Raksha Mantri will be the Chief Guest for the event.
  • Christened after a mountain range in the state of Uttarakhand, ‘Dunagiri’ is the fourth ship of P17A Frigates. These are follow-on of the P17 Frigates (Shivalik Class) with improved stealth features, advanced weapons and sensors and platform management systems.
  • ‘Dunagiri’ is the reincarnation of the erstwhile ‘Dunagiri’, the Leander Class ASW Frigate, which in her 33 years of service from 05 May 1977 to 20 Oct 2010, had witnessed various challenging operations and multinational exercises.
  • The soul of a ship lives eternally and finds a suitable ship. The first two ships of P17A Project, were launched in 2019 and 2020 at MDL and GRSE respectively. The third ship (Udaygiri) was launched at MDL on May 17 earlier this year.

I2U2 Countries To Increase Joint Investment In Six Areas Including Energy, Food Security

  • I2U2 group countries have agreed to increase joint investment in six important areas of water, energy, transport, space, health and food security, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said and noted that the agenda of the group is progressive and practical.
    • The summit of India, Israel, UAE, and the USA – I2U2- is being seen as Quad for West Asia. It intends to mobilize private sector capital and expertise to help modernize infrastructure, low carbon development pathways for industries, improve public health, and promote the development of critical emerging and green technologies.
    • A USD 2 billion project for agricultural parks in India is likely to be announced at the first I2U2 Leaders’ Summit, which begins on Thursday with a focus on food security challenges. The project will be funded partly by the UAE with technical expertise provided by Israel and with support from the US private sector.

Negotiations For Indo-French AMCA Engine In Progress

  • India’s negotiations with French engine manufacturer Safran for the co-development of a new engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) has become protracted because of continuing discussions over crucial points.
  • The French company has submitted a proposal to India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) to co-develop a new 110 kN thrust engine. The engine is to be developed with the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) of India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • The maiden flight of the AMCA is scheduled for 2024-25, with series production beginning in 2030, while the development agency believes that after four years of flight testing, the period can be shortened to 2028-29.

AMCA – India’s Futuristic Fighter Jet

  • The AMCA is envisioned as a twin-engine stealth aircraft with an internal weapons bay and Diverter-less Supersonic Intake, which has been produced for the first time and for which the design is now complete.
  • It will be a 25-tonne aircraft with an internal payload of 1,500 kg and an exterior payload of 5,500 kg in addition to 6,500 kg of internal fuel.
  • The Indian Air Force is said to have committed 40 AMCA Mk-1 fighters and at least 100 Mk-2 derivatives, as well as some unmanned variants. The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) would be stealthy and have ‘super cruise’ capabilities.

India’s Su-30MKI Upgrade Is Hampered By Sanctions Against Russia

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) has been forced to defer an upgrade of a large number of its Russian-origin Su-30MKI multirole fighters to the ‘Super Sukhoi’ standard due to sanctions imposed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
  • Senior industry officials said the proposed retrofit of 85 of around 260 licence-built Su-30MKIs had included replacing the fighter’s digital multimode dual-frequency NIIP N011M Bars radar with an AESA one. The work was to have been jointly executed by India’s state-owned HAL and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation.
  • The Su-30 MKIs form the mainstay of the Indian Air Force as 272 of them have been ordered by the IAF in different batches as every time shortage of fighter jets in service was highlighted, the Russian manufacturers would receive an order of 30 to 40 of these planes.
  • The aircraft are supplied by the Russian manufacturers to the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in semi and complete knocked-down kits and then they are assembled in the Nasik facility.
  • The new treaty says that Bhutan can import arms as long as Indian interests are not harmed and there is no re-export of the weapons, either by the government or individuals.
  • Article 6 and 7 in the current treaty encompass the issue of ‘national treatment’ and equal privileges for citizens on each other’s soil.
