Global Gender Gap Index 2022

  • World Economic Forum (WEF) ranked India at 135 out of 146 countries in its Global Gender Gap (GGG) Index for 2022.
  • India’s overall score has improved from 0.625 (in 2021) to 0.629, which is its seventh-highest score in the last 16 years.
  • In 2021, India was ranked 140 out of 156 countries.
  • The gender gap is the difference between women and men as reflected in social, political, intellectual, cultural, or economic attainments or attitudes.
  • Iceland has retained its position as the world’s most gender-equal country, among 146 nations on the index.
  • Finland, Norway, New Zealand, and Sweden are the top five countries on the list respectively.
  • Afghanistan is the worst-performing country in the report.
  • Global Gender Gap Index benchmarks countries on their progress towards gender parity in four Key dimensions with Sub Metrics.

Youth In India 2022 Report

  • the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has released the ‘Youth in India 2022’ Report, which shows that the population share of the youth is starting to decline whereas the share of the elderly is expected to increase during 2021-2036.
  • A sustained drop in fertility has led to an increased concentration of the population at working ages (between 25 and 64 years) and this shift in the age distribution provides a time-bound opportunity for accelerated economic growth known as the “Demographic Dividend”.
  • Key Findings:
  • The youth population is expected to increase initially but will start to decline in the latter half of 2011-2036 period.
  • Proportion of youth to the total population had increased from 26.6% in 1991 to 27.9% in 2016 and then projected to start a downward trend and to reach 22.7 % by year 2036.
  • States such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh are projected to see a higher elderly population than the youth by 2036.

World Youth Skills Day

  • The United Nations General Assembly declared July 15 as World Youth Skills Day in December 2014.
  • The objective was to improve socio-economic conditions for today’s youth and address the challenge of unemployment.
  • Since the inception of World Youth Skills Day, it has facilitated interaction among young people, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, businesses, governments, and development partners.
  • The theme for this year is Transforming youth skills for the future.

Annual Kanwar Yatra Begins

  • The annual Kanwar Yatra will begin today after a gap of two years. The Yatra, which was canceled in the last two years due to the COVID-19 outbreak, is expected to be attended by around 3-4 crore devotees this year.
  • Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh governments have made elaborate arrangements to manage such a large gathering.
  • Devotees participating in the yatra will collect the sacred water from the river Ganga. Devotees chant slogans in praise of Lord Shiva and sing bhajans and kirtans while taking part in the yatra.
  • While most people cover this yatra on foot, some opt for personal vehicles in case they are not able to walk long distances. Many NGOs also come forward to assist the Kanwars in their pilgrimage at various points along the way to the destination, providing makeshift accommodation, food, water, and tea.

Free COVID Booster Doses

  • People aged between 18 and 59 years can get free precaution doses of the Covid vaccine at government vaccination centers, under a 75-day special drive, starting Friday.
  • Briefing media in New Delhi yesterday after the cabinet meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur said, India is celebrating 75 years of Independence and on Azadi ka Amrit Kaal, from tomorrow till the next 75 days, citizens above 18 years of age will be given booster doses free of cost.
  • He said, the Union Cabinet has approved the proposal to mark the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence.

Comprehensive Framework On Right To Repair

  • The Department of Consumer Affairs has set up a committee to develop a comprehensive framework on the right to repair.
  • The aim of the framework is to empower consumers and product buyers in the local market and harmonize trade between the original equipment manufacturers and the third-party buyers and sellers.
  • Its aim is also to emphasize developing sustainable consumption of products and reduction in e-waste.
  • Once the framework is rolled out in India, it will become a game-changer both for the sustainability of the products and as well as serve as a catalyst for employment generation through AatmaNirbhar Bharat.
  • The committee chaired by Additional Secretary in the  Department;  Nidhi Khare held its first meeting yesterday wherein important sectors for the right to repair were identified. They include Farming Equipment, Cell Phones, Tablets, Consumer Durables, Automobiles, and Automobile Equipment.

12th National Plastic Surgery

  • Burn and Plastic Surgery Department of AIIMS, Delhi in collaboration with Association of Plastic Surgeons of India (APSI), will organize ‘APSI Sushruta Film Festival’ (ASFF 2022) to observe 12th National Plastic Surgery Day on 15th of this month.
  • Department Head of Burn and Plastic Surgery Dr. Professor Maneesh Singhal said that this film festival is on the theme of Changing lives with Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He highlighted that the film festival is envisioned to promote the best works done by plastic surgeons across the country.
  • Professor Singhal said that the best films based on plastic surgery will be shown during the festival. He said, the festival will help in changing the public perception of plastic surgery and its various domains.

US: Inflation Reached Four-decade High

  • In US, inflation reached a four-decade high in June, with consumer prices soaring by 9.1 percent compared to the previous year, as said by the US government yesterday.
  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics said prices were up 1.3 percent in June compared to May. According to media reports, it is the biggest consumer price hike since 1981 and alone is up from an 8.6 percent price hike in May.
  • The largest increase from May to June was the 7.5 percent increase in the energy index, which contributed to nearly half of the overall increase in inflation.
  • The increase in prices is putting further pressure on US households, likely to lead the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates significantly again.

Inaugural I2U2 Meet Concluded

  • Leaders of India, Israel, United Arab Emirates, and the United States, I2U2 have said that the inaugural I2U2 leaders meeting focussed on the food security crisis and clean energy. In a Joint Statement, the leaders said that innovative ways were discussed to ensure longer-term, more diversified food production and delivery systems that can better manage global food shocks.
  • The leaders said they intend to mobilize private sector capital and expertise to modernize infrastructure, advance low carbon development pathways for industries, improve public health and access to vaccines, and advance physical connectivity between countries in the Middle East region.
  • The I2U2 leaders highlighted initiatives on Food Security and Clean Energy in their Joint Statement.
  • The UAE will invest two billion dollars to develop a series of Integrated Food Parks across India that will incorporate state-of-the-art climate-smart technologies to reduce food waste and spoilage, conserve fresh water and employ renewable energy sources.
  • India will provide appropriate land for the project and will facilitate farmers’ integration into the food parks.
  • US and Israeli private sectors will be invited to lend their expertise and offer innovative solutions that contribute to the project’s overall sustainability.
  • These investments will help maximize crop yields and help tackle food insecurity in South Asia and the Middle East.
  • The I2U2 Group will advance a hybrid renewable energy project in Gujarat consisting of 300 Mega Watts of wind and solar capacity complemented by a battery energy storage system.
  • The US Trade and Development Agency funded a feasibility study for the 330-million dollar project.
  • UAE-based companies are exploring opportunities to serve as critical knowledge and investment partners. Israel and the US intend to work with the UAE and India to highlight private sector opportunities.
  • Indian companies are keen to participate in this project and contribute to India’s goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
