US House Approves CAATSA Sanctions Waiver To India For Purchase Of S-400

  • The US House of Representatives on Thursday passed a legislative amendment that approves an India-specific waiver for punitive CAATSA sanctions for its purchase of the S-400 missile defence system from Russia.
  • Authored and introduced by Indian American Congressman Ro Khanna, the amendment urges the Biden administration to use their authority to provide India with a Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAASTA) waiver to help deter aggressors like China.
  • The legislative amendment was passed on Thursday by voice vote as part of an en bloc (all together as a single unit) amendment during floor consideration of the National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA).
  • CAATSA is a tough US law that authorises the US administration to impose sanctions on countries that purchase major defence hardware from Russia in response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its alleged meddling in 2016 US presidential elections.

India Reaffirms Its Unflinching Support To The People Of Colombia At UNSC

  • India reaffirmed its unwavering support to Colombia and also urged the international community to continue to support the government and people of Colombia in their journey to sustain peace at the UNSC Arria-formula meeting on Colombia.
  • India also reiterated the call for enhanced and effective humanitarian assistance to all Syrians throughout the country without discrimination, politicization and preconditions
  • The Security Council was established by the UN Charter in 1945. It is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations.
  • The other 5 organs of the United Nations are—the General Assembly (UNGA), the Trusteeship Council, the Economic and Social Council, the International Court of Justice, and the Secretariat.
  • The council is headquartered in New York.

Army, Navy hold 8th Goa Tourism-BNI Rotary Rain Run 2022

  • The two Signal Training Centres of the Indian Army and the Goa Naval Area of the Indian Navy will join hands with the Rotary Club of Porvorim in organising the 8th Goa Tourism-BNI Rotary Rain Run 2022 to be held at the Sports Authority of Goa’s athletic stadium, Bambolim on July 31.
    • The event which is being organized to commemorate “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” will see Goa Tourism and the BNI, Goa region as the title sponsors.
    • Organized jointly by the Rotary Club of Porvorim (RCP), two STC, and the Goa Naval Area, the event this year will see races in the 2km, 5km, 10km, and 21km distances. The 10km and 21km half marathons will be timed events. Participants in the 5km, 10km, and 21km races will get a medal, a tee shirt, and breakfast, while the runners and walkers in the 2km run will get a medal and breakfast.
    • The 21km runners will begin their run at the SAG athletic stadium, opposite GMC at Bambolim, go up to the Miramar beach circle and return via the Goa University Road. Runners in the other categories will run from the SAG athletic stadium, opposite GMC to specific points on the Goa University Road and return to the start point.  
    • Goa is a state in western India with coastlines stretching along the Arabian Sea. Its long history as a Portuguese colony prior to 1961 is evident in its preserved 17th -century churches and the area’s tropical spice plantations. Panaji is the state’s capital, while Vasco da Gama is its largest city. 

Creation of Standalone Air Defence Command May Prove Counter-productive: Air Chief Marshal

  • Creation of a standalone air defence command may prove counter-productive as all elements of the nation’s air power need work in close coordination to confront all possible future security challenges, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari.
  • The Chief of Air Staff also said that independent air defence systems in the field will have very little relevance in tomorrow’s wars unless they are a part of a larger integrated air defence system.
  • At present, the Army, Navy, and the Air Force have separate commands. Initially, a plan was firmed up for the creation of an Air Defence Command and Maritime Theatre Command.
  • A major reform of the higher defence set-up of the country was initiated by the first Chief of Defence Staff in February 2020. General Bipin Rawat, the then Army Chief was appointed on December 31 as the first CDS.
  • The warfighting structure of the Armed Forces (Army, Air Force and Navy) is being reorganised into theatre commands with an aim to have the assets of all three forces under one commander responsible for all operations under his theatre.
  • The aim of the reform is a quick decision and faster operations to meet the requirements of modern warfare which is deemed to be short duration and quick.

Rajnath Singh Launches Stealth Frigate

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched the P17A stealth frigate Dunagiri, built by PSU Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, onto the river Hooghly in Kolkata on Friday. P17A ships are guided-missile frigates.
  • P17A Frigates are follow-on class of the P17 (Shivalik Class) Frigates with improved stealth features, advanced weapons and sensors and platform management systems. Seven P17A Frigates are under various stages of construction at MDL and GRSE.
  • Speaking about the need to increase our infrastructure and assets in the changing scenario of the world, Raksha Mantri said that economic, political and trade relations between countries are constantly evolving. Security challenges in the Indian Ocean region and Indo-Pacific are constantly increasing. In order to achieve the Prime Minister’s Vision of ‘SAGAR’, i.e. ‘Security and Growth for All in the Region’ and to protect, preserve and promote India’s National Maritime Interests, Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and other organisations have to increase the infrastructure and assets so that the country stay ahead of the curve in dealing with these challenges.

15 Naval Air Operations Officers Graduated From Naval Air Operations School

  • 15 Naval Air Operations Officers graduated from Naval Air Operations School Kochi on 15 Jul 22. Will join frontline air squadrons of the Indian Navy Coast guard. Golden Torch to 04 officers as QNI. Chief Guest R Adm R V Gokhale, FOST.  Proud parents witnessed the ceremony.
  • The Naval Air Operations School trains the fledglings of Indian Navy and Coast Guard into combat worthy men and women who are the cornerstone for mission accomplishment in Maritime Surveillance, Reconnaissance and targeting. These ‘Airborne Tacticians’ enable ordnance on target which is the ultimate purpose of any force in combat.
  • The Naval Air Operations School also trains officers and sailors from the friendly foreign countries. Specialist training to instructors shaping them into competent aircrew to groom young aspirants into Air Operations Officers is also undertaken at the school. The school is currently headed by Captain V Kasiraman who is appointed as the Officer-in-Charge.
