Naxal Violence Down By 77%: Govt to Lok Sabha

  • Naxal violence in the country has reduced by 77 % from an all-time high of 2,258 in 2009 to 509 in 2021, Union minister Nityanand Rai told the Lok Sabha.
    • The union minister of state for home Nityanand Rai said the Central government has been supplementing the efforts of states as envisaged in the ‘National Policy and Action Plan to address Left-Wing Extremism’, which was launched in 2015.

Naxalism in India:

Army’s Northern Command In High State Of Readiness

  • The Army’s Northern Command is in a high state of readiness to face constantly evolving threats and challenges, General Officer-commanding-in-chief Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi said.
  • The commander presented gallantry awards as well as distinguished service awards to Bravehearts, both officers, and other ranks, in a solemn and distinguished investiture ceremony here.
  • Gen Dwivedi said ‘Operation Sadbhavana’ has bridged the gap between the armed forces and people resulting in better civil-military integration and coordination.
  • At the ceremony, 92 gallantry awards were presented to those who showed exemplary courage under extreme circumstances during anti-terrorist operations and foiling enemy designs on the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh.
  • He expressed his gratitude to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh and the civil administration for their unstinted support and wished for peace and contentment for the people of the regions.

Airborne Exercise 2022

  • The Airborne and Special Forces of the Indian Army practiced aerial insertion and rapid response capabilities in an Airborne Exercise in Peninsular India.
  • The exercise involved advanced aerial insertion techniques including Combat Free Fall and integrated battle drills.

Armed Forces Will See Larger Participation of Women

  • “Armed Forces will see a larger participation of women in the coming years due to the recent steps taken by the Government,” said Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh while delivering the keynote address at an event organised by FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) in New Delhi on March 15, 2022.
  • The event ‘Celebrating Women’, on the theme ‘Women Transforming India’ was organised as part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ being celebrated across the country to commemorate 75 years of Independence.
  • The Raksha Mantri also made special mention of 23-year-old Ms Vinita Singh who left a salary package of Rs one crore and launched her own startup, which has now become a Rs 300 crore company. He said, this inspiring story has been made possible due to the policy brought out by the Government to promote startups in the country. “In 2014, only 500 startups were working in the country. By 2022, this count has crossed 60,000,”

Western Fleet Deployment to Sri Lanka Ends on High Note

  • The Western Fleet’s deployment to Sri Lanka culminated in a maritime partnership exercise between the two navies on 12 March 2022.
  • On departure from the port of Colombo, IN Ships Chennai and Teg exercised with Sri Lanka Navy ship Sindurala.
  • The smoothly conducted exercise began with a simulated situation of asymmetric threat against ships leaving harbor by fast attack crafts of the Sri Lankan Navy.
  • Chetak helicopter of the Indian Navy also participated in the exercise.
  • A friendly volleyball match was also played between personnel of the two navies to enhance mutual interaction at the junior levels.

GEN BIPIN RAWAT MEMORIAL CHAIR OF EXCELLENCE INSTITUTED AT THE USI

  • On the eve of the 65th birthday of late Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, the Indian Army has dedicated a Chair of Excellence in his memory at the United Service Institution of India (USI).
  • A cheque of Rs 5 lakhs was handed over to Maj Gen BK Sharma (Retd), Director, USI which will be paid as honorarium to the nominated Chair of Excellence.
  • Late General Bipin Rawat who served as India’s first CDS as well as the 27th Chief of the Indian Army was an outstanding professional and was in the midst of steering one of the most radical transformations of the Indian military.
  • Gen Bipin Rawat Memorial Chair of Excellence will focus on the field of Jointness and Integration. The Chair of Excellence is a befitting tribute to the astute leadership and professionalism of the General.

Russia’s Share of Arms Import to India Fell From 69% In 2012-17 To 46% In 2017-21

  • Russia’s share of arms imports to India fell from 69 % in 2012-17 to 46 % in 2017-21, according to a report released on Monday by Stockholm-based defence think-tank SIPRI.
  • Russia started a war against Ukraine on February 24, which led the US and other western countries to impose extremely harsh economic sanctions on the country.
  • Russia was the largest supplier of major arms to India in both 2012-16 and 2017-21, but India’s imports of Russian arms dropped by 47 % b/w the two periods as several large programmes for Russian arms wound down, said the report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
