Day For The Elimination Of Sexual Violence In Conflict

  • The United Nations General Assembly, in 2015, proclaimed that 19 June will be observed as the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict. The UN acknowledges that sexual violence often goes unpunished during wars.
  • The International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict was announced after members of the Security Council passed ‘UN Security Council Resolution 1820’ after unanimously recognizing conflict-related sexual violence as a war tactic and a threat to international peace and security.
  • The objective to mark this day is to raise awareness about the need to end conflict-related sexual violence. On this day, countries stand in solidarity with the survivors of such crimes. Governments also pledge to take steps to strengthen those who work to support these survivors.
  • Theme 2022:  ‘Prevention as Protection: Enhancing structural and operational prevention of conflict-related sexual violence.’

World Refugee Day

  • World Refugee Day is an international day organised every year on 20 June by the United Nations. It is designed to celebrate and honour refugees from around the world. The day was first established on 20 June 2001, in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees.
  • The event aims to recognise the strength of the refugees who have fled the conflict and persecution of their country in hope of finding sanctuary and living a better life. World Refugee Day builds the concept of understanding for their plight which shows one’s resilience and courage in the rebuilding of their future.
  • Theme 2022: Whoever. Wherever. Whenever. Everyone has the right to seek safety.

FATF To Decide Over Pakistan’s Grey Listed Status

  • Pakistan got a reprieve from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) as FATF announced that the country could be removed from the grey list.
  • FATF is expected to decide whether to take Pakistan off the ‘grey’ list at the end of its plenary session in Berlin in October.
  • Pakistan has been on the FATF grey list continuously since June 2018.
  • The FATF is an inter-governmental body that sets international standards seeking to prevent international financial crimes that aid terrorism.
  • The FATF was established in July 1989 by a G-7 Summit in Paris, initially to examine and develop measures to combat money laundering.

World Crocodile Day

  • World Crocodile Day is celebrated on 17th June. The day is a global awareness campaign to highlight the plight of endangered crocodiles and alligators around the world.
  • The Crocodile Research Council, in conjunction with the Belize Zoo, created World Croc Day. The first global event was held on June 17th, 2017.
  • Somethings Interesting About Crocs:
  • Of all the animals in the world, the crocodile’s bite is the strongest.
  • There are 15 different species of crocodiles.
  • Crocodiles can live in both freshwater and saltwater.
  • They eat fish, birds, and other animals.
  • Crocodiles can live to be 100, with the oldest crocodile in the world reaching 140.

UNMESHA – International Literature Festival

  • The Ministry of Culture and Sahitya Akademi are organizing Unmesha, an International Literature Festival in Shimla as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, with the support of the Department of Art and Culture, Government of Himachal Pradesh.
  • With over 425 writers, poets, translators, critics and distinguished personalities from various walks of life from 15 countries including India, representing over 60 languages and 64 events, UNMESHA is the largest literature festival in the country.

‘Bhartiya Samvidhan: Ankahi Kahani’

  • The Prime Minister released Ram Bahadur Rai’s book ‘Bhartiya Samvidhan: Ankahi Kahani’ and addressed the event through a video message.
  • He said that from the formation of the Constituent Assembly to its debates, from the adoption of the Constitution to its present stage, we have consistently seen a dynamic and progressive constitution.
  • He noted that it was on 18 June that President Rajendra Prasad signed the first amendment of the constitution.
  • He said it marks the first day of the democratic dynamism of the Constitution, which is our biggest strength.
  • Mr Modi said, we have argued, raised questions, debated and made changes. He expressed confidence that this will continue in our masses and in the minds of the people.

44th Chess Olympiad

  • This year, for the very first time, International Chess Federation, FIDE, has instituted the Chess Olympiad Torch, a part of the Olympic tradition, but was never done in the Chess Olympiad. India is the first country to have the Chess Olympiad Torch Relay.
  • Notably, taking the Indian roots of Chess to a greater height, the Torch Relay for the Chess Olympiad will henceforth always begin in India and travel across all continents before reaching the host country.
  • FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich will hand over the torch to Prime Minister Modi, who in turn will hand it over to Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand. This torch will then be taken to 75 cities in a span of 40 days before the final culmination at Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu. At every location, chess grandmasters of the state will receive the torch.
  • The 44th Chess Olympiad will be held in Chennai from 28th of next month to 10th of August. The prestigious competition, which is being organised since 1927, is being hosted in India for the first time and in Asia after 30 years. With 189 countries participating, this will be the largest participation in any Chess Olympiad.

Neeraj Chopra Clinches Gold In 2022 Kuortane Games

  • Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra has clinched gold in the 2022 Kuortane Games in Finland yesterday. Neeraj defeated reigning world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada for the second time in four days. Neeraj threw 86.69 metres to clinch the top prize in tricky and wet conditions.
  • The Indian javelin thrower hit the spot on his very first try at the tournament, had a foul on his second try, and bore a nasty slip in his third attempt, following which he chose to skip the remaining two attempts.
  • The Golden Boy of India will next take part in the Stockholm leg of the Diamond League on June 30.
