11th India – Italy Military Cooperation Group Meeting

  • 11th edition of India – Italy Military Cooperation Group meeting was held from 31 May 2022 to 01 June 22 in Rome, Italy.
  • MCG is a forum established to boost defence cooperation b/w both countries through regular talks at the strategic and operational levels between Hq, IDS and the Joint Staff HQ of Italian Armed Forces.
  • The meeting was Co-Chaired from the Indian side by Deputy Assistant Chief of Integrated Staff IDC(A), HQ IDS Brigadier Vivek Narang and Italian Defence General Staff Brigadier General Alessandro Grassano, from the Italian side.

  • India and Italy are ancient civilizations but young states (Italy having been reunified only in 1861).
  • The classical languages, Sanskrit and Latin both belong to the Indo-European language family.

Indian Navy To Bid Farewell To Two Frontline Ships

  • The Indian Navy will decommission two of its frontline warships on Friday, marking an end to their glorious voyages of protecting the nation’s maritime interests for around 32 years.
  • The two ships — Nishank and Akshay.
  • Nishank, the fourth of the Veer-class missile corvette, has been an integral part of the “Killer Squadron” renowned for its heroics in the 1971 war.
  • Akshay is part of the 23rd patrol vessel squadron whose primary role is anti-submarine warfare and coastal patrol.
  • These ships deployed on numerous occasions during heightened security situations such as during the Kargil War in 1999, Operation Parakram in 2001 and after the 2017 Uri attack, maintaining a vigil to give a befitting reply against any enemy misadventure.

E-Concurrence Module Launched on Government e-Marketplace for MOD

  • As a significant step towards the Digital India vision of the GeM has developed an IT module for MOD, for integration of competent financial authorities and Internal Financial Advisers for online e-concurrence and approval of procurement proposals on the GeM portal.
    • Procurement by MoD through Government e-Market portal had reached an all-time high of Rs 15,047.98 crore for the Financial Year 2021-22, which is more than 250 percent over the last financial year.

Indian Naval Ship Tarangini visits Malta

  • Indian Naval Ship Tarangini visits Malta, 29-30 May. She was accorded a warm welcome by the  High Commission of India. The Captain and crew welcomed Maltese and Indian people on board for a guided tour.
  • The Sail Training Ship (STS), built in Goa and commissioned in November 1997, has steamed over 250,079 nautical miles in her 24 years of commission, and is in her silver jubilee year.
  • The primary role of the ship is to foster time-honored virtues of courage, camaraderie and endurance in officer cadets embarking on a naval career.
  • The aim of these overseas deployments has been to undertake training of Sea Trainees, strengthening bi-lateral ties and showcasing the reach of Indian navy around the world.

Int. Yoga Day 22 Count Down At INS Shivaji

  • INS Shivaji organised Count Down to IDY22 with 2nd Common Yoga Protocol under the supervision of instructors from Kaivalya Dham Yoga Institute at Lonavala on 30 May 22. Actively participated by all including ladies and children.

  • INS Shivaji is an Indian naval station located in Lonavala, Maharashtra, India. It houses the Naval College of Engineering which trains officers of the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard. It was commissioned on 15 February 1945 as HMIS Shivaji. It is located close to the Bhushi Dam.
  • The Union Ministry of Ayush has ‘Yoga for Humanity’ as the theme for International Day of Yoga, 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in his monthly Mann ki Baat address. The eighth edition of the International Day of Yoga will be organised on June 21, with the main event being held in Mysuru, Karnataka.  

Indonesian Defence Navy Visited SNC

  • Indonesian Defence Attaché Cmde Didik Kurniawan, along with delegates from Indonesian Embassy, Delhi,  visited Southern Naval Command, Kochi on 30 May 22. They visited INS Dronacharya and ND School and interacted with RAdm TVN Prasanna, CSO(Training).

India To Test Next-Gen Astra Mk 2 This Month

  • Indian defence and security establishment is set for the maiden test of the indigenous Astra Mk 2 missile with a 160-km range.
  • Defence Ministry announced the signing of a deal for the Astra Mk 1 BVR AAM and associated equipment, at a cost of Rs 2,971 crore. The Astra Mk 1 missile, for the use of the IAF & Indian Navy, is being procured from BDL.
  • This is the first such indigenous missile to enter the service of the Indian armed forces, which has always depended on Russian (mainly R 73 and R 77) and French (Mica and Meteor) air-to-air missiles.
  • Astra Mk. 2 will use a dual-pulse solid rocket motor for extended reach and better kinematics during the kill phase.
  • The plan is to extend the range of Mk. 2 version to 160 kilometres (99 mi) rivaling American AMRAAM AIM 120-D. Astra Mk. 2
  • A future variant Mk. 3 based on Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) engine is being jointly developed by India and Russia. The missile was first tested on 30 May 2018 and a further test was carried out on 8 February 2019.

Indian Navy Commissions INAS 325 aircraft

  • In an impressive ceremony held at INS Utkrosh, Port Blair. Indian Naval Air Squadron (INAS) 325 was commissioned into the Indian Navy. The INAS 325 was commissioned by Lieutenant General Ajai Singh, AVSM, Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar.

  • The state-of-the-art multi-role helicopter has been developed and manufactured by HAL, Bangalore which embodies the mission of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and helps protect maritime interests in the region to boost India’s strategic presence.
  • “These helicopters come with the latest-generation avionics and role equipment. They are primarily meant for use in long-range SAR and Maritime recce role. They can also be used for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief in the Islands.

Major Jyoti Yadav Commands International Contingent During UN International Peacekeepers Day

  • Major Jyoti Yadav of the Indian Army commanded the International Contingent during the United Nations International Peacekeepers Day ceremony at Goma, Congo.

IAF Officer Scales Mt Everest, Sings National Anthem On Reaching Summit

  • Wing Commander Vikrant Uniyal of the Indian Air Force, posted at Central Air Command, Prayagraj scaled Mt Everest on May 21 on the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • Wg Cdr Vikrant Uniyal is a qualified mountaineer who trained from Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi, Army Mountaineering Institute, Siachen, and National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The Everest expedition itself is an unparalleled journey of both legendary and epic proportions, and as an ode to the sacrifices made for the country, the IAF officer as a befitting honour to freedom fighters, recited the national anthem at the summit of Mt Everest, said Gp Capt Samir Gangkhedkar, public relations officer (defence), Prayagraj.
