Adm R Hari Had An Engaging Virtual Interaction With Kumar, CNS JMSDF

Adm R Hari Kumar, CNS had an engaging virtual interaction with Adm SAKAI Ryo, Chief of Staff, JMSDF. Wide-ranging discussions covered the furtherance of Special Strategic Global Partnership & new avenues for enhancing Defence Cooperation in the Maritime Domain.
India Japan Relations: The exchange between Japan and India is said to have begun in the 6^th century when Buddhism was introduced to Japan.
India and Japan established diplomatic relations on 28 April 1952.
: Japan also announced its joining of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and signed numerous bilateral MoUs with India.
Apart from the Annual Summits, the annual Foreign Minister level Strategic Dialogue, Defense Ministers Meeting, NSA-level Dialogue, Ministerial level 2+2 and FOC Consultations and other bilateral dialogue mechanisms ensure regular high level and functional engagements.
Other MEA-led-bilateral dialogues: The Act East Forum, established in 2017, aims to provide a platform for India-Japan collaboration under the rubric of India’s “Act East Policy” and Japan’s “Free and Open Indo-Pacific Vision”.
Continuing bilateral and multilateral exercises including “Dharma Guardian” and “Malabar” respectively, while welcoming the participation of Japan for the first time in exercise MILAN.
Both India and Japan are members of the G-20 and G-4.
They are also member countries of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER).

China Conducts Military Exercise With Attack Choppers Over Pangong Lake

China’s PLA carried out a military exercise with attack helicopters over Pangong Lake, a video telecast by the state media network. After the two countries concluded the 16^th round of Corps Commander-level talks held at the Chushul-Moldo border meeting point on the Indian side of the LAC between India and China held on Sunday.
India has been looking at complete disengagement of troops from the friction points and moving back troops to the pre-May, 2020 situation in the entire sector.
The last disengagement of troops on the LAC took place a year ago which led to the limited resolution of the standoff at Patrol Point 17A in Gogra.
Delhi and Beijing reached an agreement in February 2021 to disengage troops from the 135-km Pangong Lake, creating buffer zones until all outstanding border issues are resolved.
The Army has now allotted the Mathura-based 1 Strike Corps to the northern borders while formations from all around the sector are holding their summer exercises there to keep a check on the People’s Liberation Army’s activities across the Line of Actual Control.

China Eyes Military Base In Indian Ocean Region In Madagascar

China is making forays in the Western Indian Ocean Region, an area where India traditionally has a big presence, and upping its defence cooperation eyeing a military base in Madagascar.
- China provides over 20 slots to Madagascar military personnel for training.
- China provides financial support and military equipment communication items and military uniforms to Madagascar. Chinese ships have visited the island in the past for maintenance. China has also donated two short-range patrol vessels to Madagascar.
- Madagascar is a key island in the Indian Ocean Region located near Mauritius and Seychelles, New Delhi’s close military partners in the region.
- Madagascar has the world’s sixth largest rare earth deposits.
- China increasingly views the Indian Ocean as among its most strategically vital maritime interests, especially with the opening of new trade routes through Pakistan and Myanmar that reduce shipping time by weeks and lower China’s vulnerability to the Malacca Dilemma.

After War With Azerbaijan, Armenia Taps India For Military Hardware

Recently in June, a defence delegation from the Republic of Armenia visited India, meeting with their counterparts here. The delegation came armed with a shopping list. While little is known about its contents, drones have been confirmed to have figured prominently on the list.
However, in 2020 Armenia lost all the territory to Azerbaijan, including the corridor that connected Armenia to the enclave. Though a member of the Russia-led Collective Security Treaties Organisation (CSTO), Russia refused to intervene in the war since it considered Nagorno-Karabakh to technically not be ‘Armenian territory’. Russian defence equipment also proved not to be a match for the Turkish equipment that was deployed, especially Turkish Bayraktar TB2 drones. Turkish military counsellors and arms won the war for Azerbaijan. “Russia intervened only when it felt Turkey would become a permanent presence in the region,” said the official bitterly. The result – a Russian peace keeping force in Nagorno-Karabakh. But the war also showed the limits of Western support and help for Armenia, as well as the limits of Armenian soft power -primarily its diaspora abroad, which is a source of pride for many Armenians. Armenia, even as located in a hostile neighbourhood, remains dependent on Russia. And Russia now remains focused on Ukraine.
In 2020, it concluded a deal with India worth 40 million for the supply of four indigenously built weapon-locating radars. The SWATHI radars have been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

India’s Missile Woman Tessy Thomas Is Now A Recipient Of APJ Award

Popularly known as India’s missile woman, Dr. Tessy Thomas is a scientist and Director General (Aero Systems) at the DRDO. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam nominated her as the first woman scientist to lead an Indian missile project, the Agni Project.
Her knowledge of solid propellant systems was crucial to the construction of the missile’s re-entry mechanism, which allowed it to sustain high velocity and temperatures of 3,000 degrees Celsius when re-entering the atmosphere.
Dr. Tessy has received a number of prestigious awards for her work, including the DRDO Scientist of the Year award in 2008, the DRDO Performance Excellence Award in 2011 and 2012, the India Today Women of the Year award in 2009…
The Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence in Public Administration in 2012, the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year in 2012, the Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya Award in 2016, and the Outstanding Woman Achiever Award by Women in Science and (WISE).
