International Day Against Drug Abuse And Illicit Trafficking

  • The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is a United Nations International Day against drug abuse and the illegal drug trade. It is observed annually on 26 June, since 1989.
  • The date June 26 is to commemorate Lin Zexu’s dismantling of the opium trade in Humen, Guangdong, ending on June 25, 1839, just before the First Opium War in China. The observance was instituted by the General Assembly Resolution of 7 December 1987.
  • The UN’s 2007 World Drug Report puts the value of the illegal drug trade at US$322 billion a year.

UN International Day In Support Of Victims Of Torture

  • The United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is an international observance held annually on 26 June to speak out against the crime of torture and to honour and support victims and survivors throughout the world.
  • The day was selected by the United Nations General Assembly for two reasons. First, on 26 June 1945, the United Nations Charter was signed during the midst of World War II – the first international instrument obliging UN members to respect and promote human rights.
  • Second, 26 June 1987 was when the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment came into effect.

Micro, Small And Medium Sized Enterprises Day

  • Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) Day is celebrated every year on June 27 to recognise the contribution of these industries in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • According to the United Nations (UN), as many as 90 per cent of businesses are generated from MSMEs and these businesses provide 60 to 70 per cent of employment.
  • The contribution of MSME to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) worldwide is 50%.
  • The UN designated June 27 as Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day through a resolution passed in the UN General Assembly in April 2017.
  • In May 2017, a program titled ‘Enhancing National Capacities for Unleashing Full Potentials of MSMEs in Achieving the SDGs in Developing Countries’ was launched.

Sucheta Kripalani Remembered On Her Jayanthi

  • Sucheta Kripalani (25 June 1908 – 1 December 1974) was an Indian freedom fighter and politician.
  • She was India’s first female Chief Minister, serving as the head of the Uttar Pradesh government from 1963 to 1967.
  • She studied at Indraprastha College and Punjab University before becoming a Professor of Constitutional History at Banaras Hindu University.
  • In 1936, she married J. B. Kripalani, a prominent figure of the Indian National Congress.

47th Anniversary Of Emergency In India

  • On June 25th, 1975, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed a nationwide state emergency which went down as one of the most notorious events in Indian history.
  • It curtailed restrictions on civil liberties, and press freedom and led to crackdowns against Congress’ political oppositions.
  • The order for imposing the Emergency was issued by President Fakhruddin Ali under Article 352 of the Constitution.
  • The Emergency ended on March 21, 1977, before which Indira Gandhi had called for fresh elections on January 18, 1977.
  • She had also ordered the release of many opposition leaders from prison.

New Director Of IB & CEO Of NITI Aayog Appointed

  • Retired IAS officer and former Drinking Water and Sanitation Secretary Parameswaran Iyer has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of Niti Aayog.
  • Mr Iyer will succeed Amitabh Kant who is completing tenure on the 30th of this month.
  • Senior IPS officer Tapan Kumar Deka appointed Director of Intelligence Bureau.

USA SC Overrules Constitutional Right To Abortion

  • US Supreme Court has overturned a 50-year-old ruling that recognised a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion.
  • Supreme Court, in a 6-3 majority ruling, upheld a Republican-backed Mississippi law that bans abortion after 15 weeks.
  • The judgement will transform abortion rights in America, with individual states now able to ban the procedure.
  • Half of US states are expected to introduce new restrictions or bans. 13 have already passed trigger laws to automatically outlaw abortion following the Supreme Court’s ruling.
  • President Joe Biden has slammed the US Supreme Court for ending the right to abortion, accusing it of putting women’s lives at risk in the name of an extreme ideology.
  • In a White House speech, President Biden said it is a sad day for the court and the country, calling the decision cruel and saying it takes America back 150 years.

Bharat New Car Assessment Programme

  • Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has approved the Draft GSR Notification to introduce Bharat NCAP (New Car Assessment Program), wherein automobiles in India shall be accorded Star Ratings based upon their performance in Crash Tests.
  • In a series of tweets, Mr Gadkari, said Bharat-NCAP will serve as a consumer-centric platform allowing customers to opt for safer cars based upon their star-ratings, while promoting a healthy competition among OEMs in India to manufacture safer vehicles.
  • The Minister said Star Rating of Indian Cars based on Crash Tests is extremely crucial not only to ensure structural and passenger safety in cars, but to also increase the export-worthiness of Indian automobiles. He said, the testing protocol of Bharat NCAP shall be aligned with Global Crash Test Protocols factoring in the existing Indian regulations, allowing OEMs to get their vehicles tested at India’s own  in-house testing facilities.
  • Mr Gadkari said Bharat NCAP will prove to be a critical instrument in making our automobile  industry Aatmanirbhar with the mission of making India the Number one automobile hub in the world.
