Captain Abhilasha Barak Becomes Indian Army’s First Woman Combat Aviator

  • She has been awarded the coveted ‘wings‘ along with 36 Army pilots by the director-general of the Army Aviation during a ceremony held at Combat Army Aviation Training School in Nashik.
  • She hails from Haryana and was commissioned into the Army Air Defence Corps in September 2018. The combat aviator is the daughter of Col S Om Singh (Retd).
  • Captain Barak is an alumnus of The Lawrence School, Sanawar. She completed her graduation in B Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Delhi Technological University in 2016 and was placed at Deloitte, USA.
  • In 2018, she was commissioned into the Indian Army from the Officers Training Academy, Chennai. During her attachment with Corps of Army Air Defence, she was selected as a Contingent Commander for Presentation of Colours to Army Air Defence by President Ram Nath Kovind.
  • She attained ‘A’ grading in Army Air Defence Young officers course, 75.70 per cent in Air Traffic Management and Air Laws course and passed the promotional exam, Part B, in her first attempt.
  • The Army Aviation Corps is a component of the Army that was formed in November 1986. The Corps is headed by a Lt Gen rank officer known as Director General of Army Aviation.
  • With the motto ‘Swift and Sure’, the youngest corps of the Indian Army is set to further grow in its tactical importance on the battlefield to take further its role of force multiplier.

Indian Navy – Bangladesh Navy Bilateral EX Bongosagar Commences

  • The third edition of Indian Navy (IN) – Bangladesh Navy (BN) Bilateral Exercise ‘Bongosagar’ commenced at Port Mongla, Bangladesh on 24 May 22. The Harbour Phase of exercise is scheduled from 24-25 May which will be followed by a Sea Phase in the Northern Bay of Bengal from 26-27 May.
  • Exercise Bongosagar is aimed at developing a high degree of interoperability and joint operational skills through the conduct of a wide spectrum of maritime exercises and operations between the two navies.
  • Indian Naval Ships Kora, an indigenously built Guided Missile Corvette, and Sumedha, an indigenously built Offshore Patrol Vessel are participating in the Exercise. Bangladesh Navy is being represented by BNS Abu Ubaidah and Ali Haider, both Guided Missile Frigates.

11th India-UAE Joint Defence Cooperation Committee Meeting

  • Chief of the Force Development Authority at Ministry of Defence, UAE Major General Staff Hassan Mohamed Sultan Bani Hammad called on Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar in New Delhi on May 25, 2022.
    • It was agreed to hold the next meeting of JDCC in UAE on mutually convenient dates in 2023. The JDCC is the apex body between the Defence Ministries of India and UAE to comprehensively review & guide all aspects of bilateral defence cooperation.
    • The JDCC meeting was co-chaired by Joint Secretary (Armed Forces) Shri Dinesh Kumar and Chief of the Force Development Authority at Ministry of Defence, UAE. During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the progress made in military-to-military engagements, including joint exercises, Expert Exchanges, Industry Cooperation and Cooperation in the field of Research and Development. It was decided to identify new avenues and examine areas of mutual interest for Joint Venture in order to enhance defence industry cooperation. Enhancing the scope and complexities of the existing joint exercises was also discussed.
    • It was agreed to hold the next meeting of JDCC in UAE on mutually convenient dates in 2023. The JDCC is the apex body between the Defence Ministries of India and UAE to comprehensively review & guide all aspects of bilateral defence cooperation.
    • The General also met with Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Policy Planning and Force Development) Lt Gen Atulya Solankey at Headquarters, Integrated Defence Staff. The UAE delegation also interacted with Indian Defence Industries and visited Bharat Electronics Limited, Ghaziabad.

North Korea Fires Three Missiles, Including ICBM, Hours After Biden Leaves Asia

  • North Korea fired three missiles, including one thought to be its largest intercontinental ballistic missile on Wednesday, after U.S. President Joe Biden ended an Asia trip in which he agreed to new measures to deter the nuclear-armed state.
  • In response, the United States and South Korea held combined live-fire drills, including surface-to-surface missile tests involving the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) of the U.S. and the South’s Hyunmoo-2 SRBM.
  • North Korea has conducted a flurry of missile launches this year, from hypersonic weapons to test firing its largest intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) for the first time in nearly five years. It also appears to be preparing for what would be its first nuclear test since 2017.
  • The first missile appeared to be the North’s largest ICBM, the Hwasong-17, while a second unspecified missile appears to have failed mid-flight, said South Korea’s deputy national security advisor, Kim Tae-hyo. The third missile was a short-range ballistic missile (SRBM), a test seen as aimed at improving its nuclear delivery capability.

Joint Communication Exercise Tarang Synergy

  • Joint Communication Exercise Tarang Synergy was conducted at Bhuj among units of Indian Army, BSF, and ICG between 20-24 May. The exercise focused on synergy & interoperability validating seamless communication between all entities.

BSF

  • The BSF was raised in 1965, after the India-Pakistan war.
  • It is one of the seven Central Armed Police Forces of the Union of India under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
  • Other Central Armed Police Forces are Assam Rifles (AR), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), National Security Guards (NSG) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
  • The 2.65-lakh force is deployed along the Pakistan and Bangladesh borders.
  • It is deployed on the Indo-Pakistan International Border, Indo-Bangladesh International Border, Line of Control (LoC) along with the Indian Army and in Anti-Naxal Operations.
  • It has an air wing, marine wing, an artillery regiment, and commando units.
  • BSF has been defending Sir Creek in the Arabian Sea and Sundarban delta in the Bay of Bengal with its state-of-the-art fleet of Watercrafts.
  • BSF has an instrumental role in helping state administration in maintaining Law and Order and conducting peaceful elections.
  • BSF has been crusading against natural calamity to save precious human lives as and when warranted.
  • It contributes dedicated services to the UN peacekeeping Mission by sending a large contingent of its trained manpower every year.
  • It has been termed as the First Line of Defence of Indian Territories.
