Sustainable Transport System Award

  • Kerala has won the award for the ‘city with the most Sustainable Transport System’.
  • It will be presented by the Ministry for Housing and Urban Affairs.
  • The award is given in recognition of the transport facilities in various states and Union Territories of India.
  • The award has been given in recognition of the projects implemented – like Kochi Metro, Water Metro (Water Connectivity with the same experience as metro) and E-mobility – to enhance the transport facilities in the city of Kochi.
  • The formation of the Kochi Open Mobility Network, which digitized and integrated various transport facilities, also helped to win the award.

Net Zero Target of Saudi Arabia

  • Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s largest oil producers, announced that it will reach “net zero” greenhouse gas emissions by 2060.
  • The announcement came at the start of the kingdom’s first-ever Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) Forum. SGI aims to raise the vegetation cover, reduce carbon emissions, combat pollution and land degradation, and preserve marine life.
  • Aims to reach zero-net emissions by 2060 under its circular carbon economy programme while maintaining its leading role in strengthening security and stability of global oil markets.
  • That approach focuses on still unreliable carbon capture and storage technologies over efforts to actually reduce global reliance on fossil fuels.

Amrit Mahotsav Podcast Launched

  • As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism  G.Kishan  Reddy today launched the Amrit Mahotsav Podcast. This podcast series is a tribute to the persons and movements that significantly contributed to India’s freedom struggle and some of which did not find a place in the conventional storyline.
  • The first series, Zara Yaad Karo Qurbani, went live with an episode based on the Indian National Army.  New episodes will be added on a weekly basis. Ministry of Culture in a statement said that as an ode to the sacrifices made, it is only befitting to salute these heroes by recollecting their stories of courage and valour as part of commemorating 75 years of India’s Independence.

India’s defence exports grow by 334 percent in last 5 years

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said that the India’s defence exports have grown by 334 per cent in last five years and now the country is exporting to more than 75 countries. Addressing the Ambassadors’ Round Table Conference on DEFEXPO-22 in New Delhi, Mr Singh said, India’s export performance is a strong indicator of the quality and competitiveness of the defence products.
  • The Minister said, India has increased the defence capital outlay in the annual budget of 2021-22 by 18.75 per cent from the preceding year. This is the highest ever increment in the last 15 years. Mr Singh said, government has taken several initiatives to modernised Armed Forces and produce high quality and cost-effective weapon systems and platforms.

IPRD 2021 to commence from tomorrow

  • Indo -Pacific Regional Dialogue (IPRD)- 2021 is commencing from tomorrow. Defence Ministry has said that it will be a three-day online event which will focus on the theme ‘Evolution in Maritime Strategy during the 21st Century: Imperatives, Challenges and Way Ahead’.
  • First conducted in 2018, IPRD is the apex international annual conference of Indian Navy. It is the principal manifestation of the navy’s engagement at the strategic-level.
  • The National Maritime Foundation is the navy’s knowledge partner and chief organizer of this event. The aim of each successive edition of the IPRD is to review both opportunities and challenges that arise within the Indo-Pacific.

Konkan Shakti-2021

  • First-ever bilateral tri-service exercise between Indian and British Armed Forces begins off Konkan coast in Arabian Sea.
  • The sea phase of maiden bilateral tri-service exercise ‘Konkan Shakti-2021’ between the UK and Indian Armed Forces commenced off the Konkan coast in the Arabian Sea. All participating units were split into two opposing forces with the aim of achieving sea control to land Army ground-troops at a pre-designated site.
  • One force was led by the Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet and comprised the flagship INS Chennai, other warships of the Indian Navy and HMS Richmond, the Royal Navy’s Type-23 frigate.
  • The other force operated under the UK Carrier Strike Group comprising aircraft carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth, other UK and Netherland naval ships, and Indian warships
