Commander of US Indo-Pacific command Admiral John Aquilino meets Defence Minister
- Commander of US Indo-Pacific Command, Admiral John Aquilino, called on Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi.
- This comes in the wake of the India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue on April 11 where the US had supported India as a defence industry leader in the Indo-Pacific and a net provider of security in the region.
- Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar on Wednesday held extensive talks with Commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, Admiral John Aquilino, focusing on major challenges emanating from China’s increasing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific and possible implications of the Ukraine crisis for regional security.
- Admiral Aquilino is in India to participate in the Raisina Dialogue, India’s premier foreign policy and geo-economics conference.
- The Navy Chief also held wide-ranging discussions with Gen Angus Campbell, Chief of the Defence Force of Australia, especially to mitigate security concerns in common waters of the Indian Ocean Region.

France Mulling Sale Of Used Rafale Jets To Indian Navy
- The race to sell a new aircraft carrier-based fighter jet to the Indian Navy is heating up. Last week, US manufacturer Boeing announced it would be deploying two F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet fighters to an Indian Navy test facility in Goa for flight trials.
- The Rafale Marine is the carrier-borne variant of the Rafale fighter, which is already in service with the Indian Air Force.
- The Rafale Marine and Super Hornet are considered the front-runners to win a contract that would involve supply of up to 57 jets to the Indian Navy. These jets would primarily operate off the aircraft carrier Vikrant, which is currently undergoing sea trials.
- The report noted the Rafale Marine, which is smaller in dimensions than the Super Hornet, is well suited to the Vikrant. “… it can in particular easily use the elevators of the INS Vikrant. Which would not be quite the case for its American rival,”
Eyeing Rs 35,000 Crore in Export, India’s Import Ban List a Good Start to Tap into Foreign Markets
- The chatter lately around India’s arms exports, which has grown louder after India clinched an impressive $375 million BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile deal with Philippines, drove me to the thick official data available on the subject.
- Defence exports have grown almost six times from Rs 1,500 crore to Rs 9,000 crore in the past five years.
- India exports Personal Protective Equipment, Offshore Patrol Vessels, ALH Helicopter, SU Avionics, Bharati Radio, Coastal Surveillance Systems, Kavach MoD II Launcher and FCS, Spares for Radar, Electronic System and Light Engineering Mechanical Parts, among others, according to the defence ministry.
- The exports are going to about 84 countries, with some major export destinations being Italy, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Russia, France, Nepal, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Israel, Egypt, UAE, Bhutan, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, Philippines, Poland, Spain and Chile.
- According to a Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) report, India stands 23rd in a list of 25 largest exporters of major arms and has had a 0.2% share of the global arms exports between 2017 and 2021—up from 0.1% in the years prior to that.
- Between 2017 and 2021, India’s 50% of defence exports were to Myanmar, followed by Sri Lanka at 25%, and Armenia at 11%.
- Aside from the big-ticket BrahMos deal, the HAL has signed a contract to export the advanced version of ALH Mark III to Mauritius, which has been operating the ALH and Do-228 aircraft.
India offers additional $500 million after China’s muted response to Sri Lanka’s request
- “A friend in need is a friend indeed” is the saying as it goes. The dictum is in full play as India has offered Sri Lanka an additional $500 million to help it to import fuel while it is in an advanced stage of discussion with the IMF for a bailout package.
- The fresh $500 million additional support by India to Colombo is over and above the $ 1.5 billion credit line offered by India earlier.
- The RMB 200 million ($ 31 million) of Chinese humanitarian assistance to Colombo is a diplomatic way of denial rather than genuine support.
- Sri Lanka has to repay about $ 7 billion this year in debt servicing and other obligations. It has sought $ 4 billion of multilateral assistance from the IMF.
