Atal Tunnel Receives IBC Best Infrastructure Project Award   

  • The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Engineering Marvel Atal Tunnel built in Rohtang of Himachal Pradesh received Indian Building Congress (IBC) ‘Best Infrastructure Project’ award on April 28, 2022, in New Delhi.
  • More than thirty state-of-the-art infrastructures were nominated for the prestigious awards, the strategic tunnel was adjudged by the Jury of IBC as the Best Projects for Excellence in Built Environment in 2021.
  • The region has seen an unprecedented increase in the arrival of tourists, and in a little more than a year, the valley and the state have witnessed exponential growth in the socio-economic domains and the Atal Tunnel is destined to play a defining role in the future development of the region.
  • The tunnel built using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) was dedicated to the Nation by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on October 03, 2020. It has been equipped with a semi-transverse ventilation system, where large fans separately circulate air throughout the tunnel.
  • An emergency tunnel has been integrated into the tunnel cross-section beneath the main carriageway for evacuation during emergencies. Fires inside the tunnel will be controlled within an area of 200 metres and fire hydrants are provided at specific locations throughout the tunnel. 
  • Pollution sensors continuously monitor the air quality in the tunnel and if the air quality in the tunnel is below the desired level, fresh air is injected into the tunnel via two heavy-duty fans on each side of the tunnel.

IAF CONDUCTS NATIONAL LEVEL LOGISTICS SEMINAR ‘LOGISEM VAYU – 2022’

  • A national seminar on Logistics Management was held on 28 April 2022 at Air Force Auditorium, New Delhi. Chief of the Air Staff inaugurated the seminar and delivered the keynote address. He emphasized on the need for exploiting advancements in digital technologies, which would aid in sustaining logistics stamina in support of operations. CAS also urged stakeholders in IAF to work towards achieving the broad aims of the National Logistics Policy (NLP) and Atmanirbharta goals of Govt of India.
  • Prominent speakers and subject matter experts shared their views on NLP and Logistics in National Defence. Renowned consultants from the industry spoke about new technologies in Supply Chain Management. Selected logisticians of IAF presented their views on ‘Logistics for Combat Operations and Futuristic needs of IAF’.   These ‘talks’ generated a lot of interest amongst the participants of the seminar, which was live streamed pan-IAF.
  • A document on logistics philosophy of IAF titled ‘Tenets of Logistics‘ and a book on history of Logistics in IAF titled ‘Footprints in Sands of Time‘ were released.
  • The ‘Tenets of Logistics’ in IAF outlines the logistics credo in terms of concept of logistics operations, core functional areas, leveraging technology for conduct of business processes and necessity for jointness with sister services.

Army, Navy, IAF Chiefs Hold Talks with United States Indo-Pacific Commander

  • Army Chief Gen MM Naravane and Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari on Thursday held separate talks with Commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command Admiral John Aquilino with a focus on the situation in the Indo-Pacific and the conflict in Ukraine. Admiral Aquilino was in India to participate in the Raisina Dialogue, India’s premier foreign policy and geo-economics conference.
    • The Army said Gen Naravane and Admiral Aquilino discussed ways to enhance bilateral defence ties.
    • The Indian Air Force said Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari and the visiting American commander deliberated on wide-ranging issues including joint training and exercises.
    • The US Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) is the oldest and largest combatant command of the US that is responsible for American military activities in the Indo-Pacific.

India’s TAPAS UAV on path to user evaluation trials

  • India’s Tactical Airborne Platform for Aerial Surveillance (TAPAS) medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have completed a series of flight trials and are moving towards user evaluation trials.
  • HAL and the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) said that eight prototypes of the TAPAS UAV have been built so far and the platform has completed 143 test flights.
  • Flight trials for user validation will likely start in October 2022. According to HAL, it is prepared to manufacture five UAVs for evaluation by the military. ADE will integrate the first two aircraft. The remaining three UAVs are to be integrated by HAL. “This is to help HAL acquire expertise in the platform,” the ADE said, and added that HAL will also be the beneficiary of a transfer of technology for future production of the platform.

UK Offers India A Significant Workshare Pact In The Tempest 6th Gen Program

  • United Kingdom is keen on getting India on board in the development of the 6th gen platform with latest sizeable workshare pact with Indian developers that will involve India in the development of the software for the Tempest fighter jet.
  • The tempest program throughout its life time will also get half-yearly software updates that will radically enhance Tempest combat effectiveness in the blocks suite. if India joins the program, it will be in charge of developing software for modernization, regular security patches, algorithms for AI-enabled functionality, maintenance software for the ground crew, and weapons upgrade coding for every new system that is added to the jet.
  • This is the first time the facility has been provided to a country that is not a member of the European Union and the United States.

CONCLUSION OF COMMANDERS’ CONFERENCE – 2022/01

  • Hon’ble Raksha Mantri, Shri Rajnath Singh addressed the Senior leadership of the Indian Navy on the concluding day of the Naval Commander’s Conference on 28 April 2022. Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Ajay Bhatt, Defence Secretary and other senior MoD officials were also present.
  • Stating that he has interacted extensively with officers and sailors of the Indian Navy in the last three years, Raksha Mantri commended the sea warriors for their professionalism and dedication with which they continue to perform the duty of safeguarding the maritime interests of the nation and for maintaining a hoperationalonal tempo. He also congratulated the Navy for the successful conduct of MILAN wthe ith participation of 39 Friendly Foreign Countries.
  • Raksha Mantri appreciated the Navy for having a visible, credible and responsive presence in the Indian Ocean Region and establishing itself as the ‘Preferred Security Partner’ and complemented the Navy for the successful rescue operations of Seychellois national at sea, the anti-Narcotics operations in Feb this year and deployment of the Navy’s Flood relief teams in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
  • Raksha Mantri also commended the Navy on commissioning of major Naval units since the last Commanders’ Conference namely INS Visakhapatnam, the first ship of the P15B project, the fourth P75 submarine INS Vela and Navy’s second P8I squadron INAS 316 at INS Hansa, Goa.

After BrahMos, India offered Akash and Pinaka to the Philippines

  • DRDO along with officials from the Indian MoD is participating in Asian Defence & Security 2022 in Manila, the Philippines from 27-29th April 2022, where it will be Exhibiting state of art systems based on advanced technologies.
  • DRDO pavilion will be used to promote other Indian-made weapons systems after concluding a deal for the sale of the Indo-Russian Brahmos cruise missiles system to the Philippines.
  • DRDO is highlighting the capabilities of the Akash surface-to-air missile system and Pinaka rocket system to the Philippines Army.
  • DRDO plans to offer 214 mm Pinaka guided (75km) and Mk-II ER (90km) rockets to the Philippine Army (PA) and Philippine Marine Corps (PMC).

Indian troops to operate ‘Made in India’ armoured combat vehicles in UN missions

  • Two Made in India wheeled armoured combat vehicles have been sent to Indian troops deployed in UN missions abroad to patrol their areas of operations in UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan.
  • Reaffirming India’s commitment to global peace & security, an Indian Army battalion equipped with indigenously developed State of the Art equipment, including QRFV M4 Armoured Personnel Carriers & TATA Xenon light vehicles, is being deployed for the first time in Abyei, Africa.
  • Tata Advanced System Limited (TASL) developed the Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicle Medium (QRFV), Infantry Protected Mobility Vehicle (IPMV), and Ultra Long-Range Observation System, while Bharat Forge developed the Monocoque Hull Multi Role Mine Protected Armoured Vehicle.
