World Tuna Day

  • World Tuna Day is observed globally on 2nd May every year. This day is established by the United Nations (UN) to raise awareness about the importance of tuna fish. It is observed for the first time in 2017. According to the UN, an outsized number of nations worldwide depend upon tuna for both food security and nutrition. At the same time, more than 96 countries have tuna fisheries, and their capacity is constantly growing.
  • Its aim was to spotlight the importance of conservation management and make sure that a system is required in place to prevent tuna stocks from crashing. The primary internationally recognized World Tuna Day was observed on 2 May 2017.

World Press Freedom Day

  • The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day or just World Press Day, observed to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and marking the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in Windhoek in 1991.
  • UNESCO marks World Press Freedom Day by conferring the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize on a deserving individual, organisation or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to the defence and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially when this has been achieved in the face of danger.

World Portuguese Language Day [UNESCO]

  • The date of 5 May was officially established in 2009 by the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) – an intergovernmental organization that has been in official partnership with UNESCO since 2000, and which brings together peoples with the Portuguese language as one of the foundations of their specific identity – to celebrate the Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures.
  • In 2019, the 40th session of UNESCO’s General Conference decided to proclaim 5 May of each year as “World Portuguese Language Day”.
  • The Portuguese language is not only one of the most widespread languages in the world, with more than 265 million speakers spread through all continents, but it is also the most widely spoken language in the southern hemisphere. Portuguese remains, today, a major language of international communication and a language with a strong geographical projection, destined to increase.

Dadasaheb Phalke Remembered On His Jayanthi

  • Dadasaheb Phalke (30 April 1870 – 16 February 1944), was an Indian producer-director-screenwriter, known as “the Father of Indian cinema”.
  • His debut film, Raja Harishchandra, was the first Indian movie released in 1913 and is now known as India’s first full-length feature film. He made 95 feature-length films and 27 short films in his career, spanning 19 years, until 1937, including his most noted works: Mohini Bhasmasur (1913), Satyavan Savitri (1914), Lanka Dahan (1917), Shri Krishna Janma (1918) and Kaliya Mardan (1919).
  • The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, awarded for its lifetime contribution to cinema by the Government of India, is named in his honor.

Satyajit Ray Remembered On His Jayanthi

  • Satyajit Ray (2 May 1921 – 23 April 1992) was an Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, documentary filmmaker, author, essayist, lyricist, magazine editor, illustrator, calligrapher, and music composer. Widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, Ray is celebrated for works such as The Apu Trilogy (1955–1959), The Music Room (1958), The Big City (1963) and Charulata (1964).
  • Ray’s first film, Pather Panchali (1955), won eleven international prizes, including the inaugural Best Human Document award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival.
  • Ray received many major awards in his career, including 36 Indian National Film Awards, a Golden Lion, a Golden Bear, 2 Silver Bears, many additional awards at international film festivals and ceremonies, and an Academy Honorary Award in 1992. The Government of India honored him with the Bharat Ratna, its highest civilian award, in 1992.

Eid Ul Fitr Celebrated Across India

  • Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of the fasting month of Ramzan.
  • The festival is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal.
  • The crescent moon for the Islamic month of Shawwal was not sighted on Sunday evening, therefore clerics across the country announced that the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated in India on May 3.

PM Modi Embarks On 3 Nation Visit

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay an official visit to three European Countries- Germany, Denmark and France from 2nd to 4th May. Mr Modi would be visiting these three countries for bilateral as well as multilateral engagements
  • Giving details about the Prime Minister’s Visit, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra told the media in New Delhi that on the first leg of his visit to  Berlin in  Germany on 2nd May, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
  • Mr Kwatra said the two leaders will co-chair the sixth edition of the India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations.
  • The biennial IGC is a unique dialogue format that also sees participation of several Ministers from both sides. Mr Kwatra said that this will be Prime Minister’s first IGC with Chancellor Scholz, and also the first such Government-to-Government consultations of the new German government, which assumed office in December last year.
  • Mr Kwatra said that after concluding the visit of Germany, Prime Minister Modi on 3rd of May, will travel Copenhagen next on an official visit at the invitation of Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen.  This will be  Mr Modi’s first visit to Denmark but his third summit-level interaction with the Danish PM and the discussions will focus on bilateral issues as well as issues of global and regional interest.
  • During the visit, Mr Modi will hold talks with Prime Minister Frederiksen and pay a call on  Queen Margrethe II.  The visit would provide both sides an opportunity to shape new elements of partnership in the field of skill development,  shipping, agri technology  and mobility. During the visit, Prime Minister will attend an India-Denmark Business Forum and also address members of the Indian diaspora.
  • On 4th of May, Mr Modi will participate in the 2nd India-Nordic Summit along with Prime Minister’s of Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Sweden and Norway.
  • The Summit will focus on subjects like post-pandemic economic recovery, climate change, innovation and technology, renewable energy, the evolving global security scenario and India-Nordic cooperation in the Arctic region. The 1st India-Nordic Summit took place in 2018 in Stockholm.
  • Prior to the 2nd India-Nordic Summit, Mr Narendra Modi will hold bilateral Summit meetings with the Prime Minister of  Norway Jonas Gahr Støre, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson,  Prime Minister of Iceland Katrín Jakobsdóttir and Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin.
  • On the last leg of the tour, Prime Minister will briefly stopover in Paris and meet France President  Emmanuel Macron. Mr Kwatra said that Prime Minister  Narendra Modi’s visit to France will provide an opportunity to carry forward the high level engagement between the two countries post the French Presidential elections.

DD National Pet Show Wins ENBA Award 2021

  • Doordarshan has won ENBA Award 2021 for its TV series based on pet care namely ‘Best Friend Forever’ under the 14th edition of Exchange4media News Broadcasting Awards, ENBA Awards. Doordarshan’s TV series has been selected for the best in-depth Hindi series.
  • The ‘Best Friend Forever’ TV series is a half-an-hour weekly live phone-in show on DD National, wherein two pet experts guide people on how to take care of pets and other pet-related issues.

NCTE Invites Online Applications

  • The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has invited online application for the four years Integrated Teacher Education Programmes (ITEP) for the academic session 2023-24. The programme is a dual-major holistic bachelor’s degree offering B.A. B.Ed., B. Sc. B. Ed. and B.Com. B.Ed.
  • Education Ministry said, it is one of the major mandates of the National Education Policy 2020 related to Teacher Education. The admission will be carried out by the National Testing Agency through the National Common Entrance Test. The four-year ITEP will be available for all students who choose teaching as a profession after secondary, by choice. The Ministry said, the course will contribute substantially to the revitalization of the entire teacher education sector.
