World Bicycle Day

  • In April 2018, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 3 as International World Bicycle Day.
  • The resolution for World Bicycle Day recognizes “the uniqueness, longevity, and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport.
  • Professor Leszek Sibilski (who is a Polish social scientist working in the United States) led a grassroots campaign with his sociology class to promote a UN Resolution for World Bicycle Day, eventually gaining the support of Turkmenistan and 56 other countries.

RPF Pan India Drive Operation Mahila Suraksha

  • Railway Protection Force (RPF) has rescued 150 women including many girls from becoming the victims of human trafficking during pan India drive Operation Mahila Suraksha.
  • It has also arrested over 7000 men for traveling in coaches reserved for women. The force also organized 5742 awareness campaigns to educate rail users regarding their safety and Dos and  Don’ts as the safety and security of women have always been paramount to the Indian Railways.
  • Meri Saheli, a pan India initiative with the objective of providing enhanced safety and security to lady passengers for their entire journey is also operational.
  • RPF teams covering 223 stations across the Indian railways interacted with more than 2 Lakh 25 thousand ladies and provided them end-to-end security.

INA Veteran Anjalai Ponnusamy No More

  • Freedom fighter Anjalai Ponnusamy, who fought for India’s independence from colonial Britain, died , aged 102.
  • Anjalai was once a soldier who served under the command of Netaji Bose, a name known to Indians here and abroad.
  • A prominent figure in the struggle for India’s independence, Bose was a contemporary of Mahatma Gandhi, who shared his dream of an India free from British rule.
  • To accomplish this, he founded the Indian National Army in 1943, albeit with the support of the Japanese, during World War II.
  • At the age of 21, Anjalai joined the Rani of Jhansi Regiment – the women’s regiment of the Indian National Army.
  • After the war ended with the Japanese defeat, the Indian National Army was disbanded, and Anjalai returned home to continue her life in Malaysia.
  • During her lifetime, she had the privilege of seeing both Malaya and India gain independence from the British to become nations of their own.

Procurement By Cooperatives Through GeM Portal

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its approval for expanding the mandate of Government e-Marketplace, GeMs to allow procurement by Cooperatives as buyers on it. Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur briefed the media about the cabinet decisions, in New Delhi yesterday.
  • He said, the move will help Cooperatives in getting competitive prices through open and transparent process. He said, over 8.54 lakh registered cooperatives and their 27 crore members will benefit from the decision.
  • Mr Thakur said, Ministry of Cooperatives will decide on validated list of cooperatives to be onboarded on GeM. He said, GeM will provide dedicated onboarding process for cooperatives.
  • Mr Thakur said, after opening the GeM portal, Self-Help Groups, MSMEs and small businesses have benefitted a lot. He said, different PSUs, Ministries, Departments, autonomous bodies or local bodies of the Government started buying from the GeM portal.
  • The Government e-Marketplace was launched on August 9, 2016 by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to create an open and transparent procurement platform for Government buyers.

LPG Connections Increased Under PM Ujjwala Yojana

  • India has increased the number of it’s LPG connections from 14.5 crores to 30.39 crores since 2014. Under PM Ujjwala Yojana nine crore connections have been provided and additional 60 lakhs connections have been approved.
  • Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said, that the government is aiming to reach each household through gas pipeline connection in the upcoming years. He said, since 2014 the PNG connections have increased from over 24 lakh to 90.9 lakh. He added that the country has also increased the number of its CNG stations from 936 to over four thousand during the period.
  • On ethanol blending, the Minister informed that upto 2014 the country had 1.5 percent ethanol blending while after 2014 it has now gone upto 9.98 percent.
  • He said the center has set a target to achieve 20 percent ethanol blending by 2025. Since, 2014, India has increased the number of its bottling plants from 187 to 202. Replying to a media query, Mr Puri said there is no shortage of energy in the country.

Internship For Law Students

  • Department of Legal Affairs has introduced opportunity for internship for law students, under it’s offices in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Chennai. The Internship programme aims to acquaint young law students with workings of the Department of Legal Affairs by training them in various related fields.
  • They include research and reference work, tendering legal advice in various specialized fields of law such as constitutional and administrative law, finance law, infrastructure law, economic law, labour law, conveyancing, arbitration and contract law.
  • In a statement, the Ministry of Law and Justice said, the selected interns will be given a token remuneration.

India Wins Bronze At Asia Cup Men’s Hockey

  • In Asia Cup men’s hockey 2022 at Jakarta, team India produced a gritty performance to beat Japan 1-0 and claimed the bronze medal. An early goal from Rajkumar Pal and some fine defending works was enough for this young Indian side to overcome Japan in an engrossing game. 
  • India captain Birendra Lakra wins the player of the match award for his sturdy defensive work.

Denmark Votes For The EU’s Common Defense Policy

  • Denmark took to the polls yesterday to vote on whether to join the EU’s common defense policy. With nearly all votes counted, roughly two-thirds of Danish voters supported the measure. Denmark’s electoral authority reported that 66.9% voted in favor of ending Denmark’s opt-out from EU defense policy, with 33.1% against dropping the opt-out.
  • Just weeks after the Russia started special military opration in Ukraine, the Danish parliament made a historic agreement to increase defense spending by 1 billion dollar over the next two years. The same agreement called for phasing out Russian gas, as well as calling the current referendum on joining a shared EU defense policy.
  • Denmark, historically critical of the EU, secured exemptions from joining the common security and defence policy (CSDP) and the euro in a 1993 referendum, but the country’s prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, said it was time to change track.
  • Participation in the EU’s defence policy will allow Denmark, a founding Nato member, to take part in joint EU military operations, such as those in Bosnia, Mali and Somalia, and will allow Danish officials to stay in the room when EU colleagues discuss defence issues.
