Air Marshal Sanjeev Kapoor assumes the Appointment of Director General
- Air Marshal Sanjeev Kapoor assumed the appointment of Director General (Inspection and Safety) [DG(I&S)] of Indian Air Force at Air HQ New Delhi on 01 May 2022.
- The Air Marshal is a graduate of National Defence Academy and was commissioned in the Flying branch of IAF in December 1985 as a Transport Pilot. He is an alumnus of Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) Wellington, College of Defence Management and National Defence College.
- In a service career spanning over 36 years, the Air Marshal has tenanted important command and staff appointments. He has commanded an operational transport squadron and a premier transport base. He has served as Head of the Faculty and Senior Air Force Instructor at College of Defence Management, Principal Director Operations (Transport), Assistant Chief of the Air Staff Operations (Transport & Helicopters), Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Personnel Airmen and Civilians) at Air Headquarters and Commandant of Air Force Academy. He was Commandant of National Defence Academy, Pune prior to assuming the present appointment.
Keel Laying of Second Ship – Diving Support Craft
- Keel laying for the second ship of the Diving Support Craft (DSC) project was held on 05 May 22 at M/s Titagarh Wagons Ltd., Kolkata. The contract for procurement of Five Diving Support Craft (Yards 325 to 329) for the Indian Navy was signed on 12 Feb 21 with M/s Titagarh Wagons Ltd., at a total project cost of Rs 174.77 Cr.
- On commissioning, these craft will provide diving assistance for IN ships inside and close to harbour, for underwater repairs, maintenance and salvage. The DSCs will be fitted with state-of-the-art diving equipment and tools for performing diving operations.
- With all main and auxiliary equipment sourced from indigenous manufacturers, these ships are proud flag bearers of Make in India initiatives of the Ministry of Defence.
AIR SQUADRON COMMISSIONED IN COAST GUARD
- Indian Coast Guard commissioned its second Air Squadron equipped with the indigenously designed and developed Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) MK III on 04 may at Coast Guard Air Enclave Kochi. 845 Squadron (CG) became the premier ALH MK-III squadron in the Coast Guard’s western seaboard.
- In a major boost to India’s maritime security, 845 Squadron (CG), has been commissioned by Director General VS Pathania.
- The commissioning of this squadron earmarks a tremendous leap towards self-reliance in the field of SAR and Long-Range Maritime Surveillance, in line with government’s push towards “Aatmanirbhar Bharat”.
- The indigenously developed ALH Mk-III helicopters feature an array of state-of-the-art sensors which add up to maritime prowess of Coast Guard. The multifaceted helicopters sport advanced communication systems, automatic identification system, search-and-rescue homer and automatic flight control system and are fitted with modern surveillance radar/electro-optical equipment which enables them to undertake the role of long-range maritime reconnaissance in addition to providing long range search and rescue, both by day and night.
Boeing, Air Works Work On Maintenance Of P-8I Warfare Aircraft
- American plane maker Boeing and India MRO company Air Works are currently undertaking heavy maintenance checks on three P-8I long-range maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft operated by the Indian Navy (IN) simultaneously at Air Works’ facility in, Hosur.
- Boeing’s strategic collaboration with Air Works was the first step under the Boeing India Repair Development and Sustainment (BIRDS) hub launched last year.
- The BIRDS hub entails a collaboration with key local companies and businesses to develop India into an aviation and defence repair and sustainment hub.
- The Boeing and Air Works collaboration has already been enabling faster turnarounds and enhanced operational capability within the country for the country’s key defence platforms. The partnership began with the first P-8I aircraft Phase 32 checks, and has grown to include Phase 48 checks and MRO on the landing gear of the Indian Air Force’s 737 VVIP aircraft.
With ‘Snags’ Reported, Defence Ministry Decides Against Repeating US Assault Rifle Order
- India’s Ministry of Defence has decided against inking the Rs 700-crore repeat order it had approved in late 2020 for 72,400 ‘Patrol’ Sig Sauer assault rifles from the US for its military, due to diverse ‘snags’ which had surfaced with earlier imports of an equal number of similar weapon systems a year before.
- The Wire that the supplementary procurement of SIG716 7.62×51 mm rifles had been abandoned following several “operational glitches” which had surfaced soon after they were issued to Indian Army units deployed along the Line of Control in Kashmir and on counter-insurgency operations in the region from December 2019 onwards.
- Meanwhile, in a parallel move the MoD also included assault rifles in its 310-strong list of military items that India will no longer import, but source domestically.
Taiwan scraps deal to buy US anti-submarine helicopters
- Taiwan has opted out of purchasing anti-submarine helicopters from the United States because they are too expensive.
- The island was planning to buy up to 12 Seahawk choppers, but the deal has been scrapped as Taipei prioritises lower cost, more mobile weaponry to counter any threat from China.
- Taiwan has shifted to a “porcupine” strategy that seeks to equip the island to repel an attack from a far larger Chinese military.
- Taiwan’s 23 million people live under the constant threat of invasion from China, which views the democratic island as its territory.
- Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has heightened fears that Beijing might one day follow through on threats to annex its smaller neighbour.
