  • The State Of The World’s Forests 2022 (SOFO 2022) Was Released By The United Nations Food And Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Delimitation Order Of Jammu And Kashmir

  • Finalizing its order for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the Delimitation Commission recommended seven additional constituencies — six for Jammu and one for Kashmir — taking the total number of seats in the UT to 90 from 83 earlier. This will increase the number of seats in the Jammu Division to 43 from 37 seats earlier, and that in the Kashmir Valley to 47 from 46 earlier.
  • Three other important takeaways from the order of the delimitation panel, chaired by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, are:
  • reorganization of the Parliamentary constituencies such that the five Lok Sabha seats now are made up of exactly 18 Assembly constituencies each, taking the total number to 90,
  • reservation of nine Assembly seats for Scheduled Tribes – six in Jammu and three in Kashmir, and 
  • removal of the regional distinction between Jammu and Kashmir and treating it as one, as is reflected in the combining of Anantnag region in Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu to carve out Anantnag-Rajouri as a Parliamentary constituency

Cyclone Ashani

  • The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in its forecast said that a low-pressure area is likely to form over South Andaman sea and neighbouring areas on Friday, May 6. It is very likely to move northwestwards and intensify gradually into a depression during the subsequent 48 hours.
  • A cyclonic system developed near the Andaman islands in India which may develop into a low-pressure area by May 9. It can develop into a cyclonic storm after changing into deep depression on May 11, landfall prediction has not been made yet, but if the system develops into a cyclone it will be named Ashani. The cyclone may hit the Satkhira district of Bangladesh after hitting Odisha and West Bengal.
  • Bangladesh State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr. M Enamur Rahman has said that the country is prepared to face the cyclone ‘Ashani’ in case it hits the Bangladesh coast.
  • Speaking to the media in Dhaka on Thursday, Enamur Rahman said that more than 14 thousand shelters were prepared for people during the cyclone Amphan which can house over 2.4 million people.

World’s Largest Film Restoration Project

  • Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said that an amount of 363 crore rupees has been allotted for the world’s largest film restoration project under the National Film Heritage Mission.
  • The mission was launched in 2016 with an outlay of 597 crore rupees. It aims at preserving, restoring and digitizing the cinematic heritage. During his visit to National Film Archive of India, in Pune yesterday, Mr Thakur said that films are part of our culture and the seminal contribution made by film industry in the last 100 years, has made India the biggest film industry in the world.
  • The Minister informed that the process of restoring over five thousand 900 short films, documentaries and features is underway. He said, this exercise carried out by National Film Archive of India proves to be one of the world’s biggest restoration, conservation, preservation and digitization process undertaken.
  • The Minister also held a meeting to review the functioning of Film and Television Institute of India, FTII and deliberated on the vision of taking FTII to international standards of excellence. Mr Thakur said, FTII should nurture entrepreneurial skills and equip students to launch startups in film and television productions.

National Sagarmala Apex Committee

  • The NSAC is the apex body providing policy directions and guidance for port-led development- Sagarmala projects and reviews its implementation.
  • The committee will review the Sagarmala programme along with review of the development of port linked Road and Rail connectivity project, development of Floating jetties and Inland waterways besides other agenda items. Holistic development of coastal communities through a new initiative ‘Sagartat Samriddhi Yojana’ will also be taken up for discussion in the meeting.
  • Sagarmala is a National Programme aimed at accelerating economic development in the country by harnessing the potential of India’s seven thousand 500-kilometer long coastline and 14 thousand 500 kilometres of potentially navigable waterways.
  • Projects under Sagarmala are being implemented by relevant Major Ports, Central Ministries, State Maritime Boards, State Governments and other agencies. Out of the total 802 projects, currently 202 projects worth 99 thousand 281 crore rupees have been completed, two hundred sixteen projects worth two lakh 12 thousand crore rupees are under implementation.
  • The Ministry said, 384 projects worth two lakh 37 thousand crore rupees are under various stages of development.

Hockey India Senior Women National Championship

  • The 12th Hockey India Senior Women National Championship 2022 begins In Bhopal. A total of 27 teams will vie for top honors in the 12-day tournament.
  • The participating teams have been divided into eight pools. After eight days of pool matches, the Quarter-Finals will be played on May 14, the Semi-Finals will be held on May 16 and the Medal matches are scheduled for 17 May.

He said, this is the right platform to show faith on local manufacturers and skilled workers and empower them to manufacture the various products required in our daily life. He also explained the meaning of the word EARTH.
  • He said E means environment where one should encourage those practices which are protecting the environment. They should discuss the ways of building 75 Amrit Sarovars in every district.
