Akash Kumar Wins Bronze Medal at World Boxing Championships

  • The International Boxing Association (AIBA) World Boxing Championships was recently held at Belgrade, Serbia.
  • Akash Kumar bagged a bronze medal in the men’s 54kg category.
  • Debutant Akash is the 7th Indian male boxer to bag a medal at the world championships.

Promotion of Inland Saline Water Aquaculture

  • Department of Fisheries organizes a webinar on “Promotion of Inland Saline Water Aquaculture”.
  • The webinar highlights the importance of aquaculture in saline affected soils with low productivity while informing about the components supported under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) for converting ‘waste land into wealth land’.
  • PMMSY envisages an investment target of Rs. 526 Crore during 2020-21 to 2024-25 for development of saline water aquaculture while generating 3 lakh employment opportunities.

Asset Reconstruction Companies

  • A Reserve Bank of India (RBI) committee (headed by Sudarshan Sen) has come out with a host of suggestions in a bid to streamline the functioning of Asset Reconstruction Companies (ARCs).
  • ARCs are a specialized financial institution that buys the Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) from banks and financial institutions so that they can clean up their balance sheets.
  • Lenders could recover only about 14.29% of the amount owed by borrowers in respect of stressed assets sold to ARCs in the 2004-2013 period.
  • Suggestions: Online Platform for Sale of Stressed Assets, Providing Additional Resources, Using Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), proposed National Asset Reconstruction Company Limited (NARCL) etc.

France to help India in advanced military technologies

  • France has emphasized partnership with India as a major pillar of its Indo Pacific strategy. It has stressed upon its continuing commitment to the Indo Pacific region as a resident power. This was highlighted during National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s visit to Paris for the annual India-France Strategic Dialogue. During the visit
  • Mr Doval met French Defence Minister Florence Parly. The Indian Embassy in Paris tweeted that both leaders discussed ways to expand bilateral and regional cooperation, deal with new threats and support India’s defence Industrialization and self-reliance. The National Security Advisor also met French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.
  • According to an official statement, India and France agreed to strengthen bilateral defence and security partnership. This will be done through enhanced intelligence and information sharing, operational cooperation, bolstering mutual capabilities and  expanding bilateral exercises. New initiatives in maritime, space and cyber domains will also be pursued. France reiterated its commitment to fully support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and defence industrialization, joint research, and technology development in India.

PM Modi emerges as top global leader with over 70 pct approval ratings

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emerged at the top of the global leader approval ratings. He sits at the top of the list with a 70 per cent approval rating. Mr Modi received the maximum approval among adults across the world. He remains at over 60 per cent in approval ratings since Morning Consult started collecting data in 2019.
  • Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stood at the second place with 66 per cent, followed by Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi (58 per cent), Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel (54 per cent) and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison (47 per cent).
  • US President Joe Biden lies at the sixth spot with 44 per cent, Canada’s Justin Trudeau at seventh with 43 per cent while United Kingdom’s Boris Johnson rounded the top 10 with 40 per cent.

At least 99 people killed in Sierra Leone

  • In  Sierra Leone,  at least 99 people have been killed following a massive explosion when a fuel tanker collided with a lorry in its capital, Freetown. Fuel spilled before igniting and the resulting inferno engulfed bystanders and vehicles at a busy junction. Footage broadcast by local media outlets showed badly charred bodies in the streets surrounding the tanker. Some 92 people are being treated in hospitals and health centers around Freetown, some of which are said to be critical. After visiting the scene, Vice-President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh said it was a national disaster. He said that the injured would receive free medical treatment.
  • The explosion is believed to have happened at a junction outside the busy Choithram Supermarket in the densely populated Wellington suburb in the east of the city at around 22:00 GMT on Friday. Sierra Leone’s National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) said the vehicles collided when the tanker was entering a nearby filling station to discharge its fuel. The drivers, noticing a leak, exited their vehicles and warned people to stay away. The explosion occurred when people tried to collect the fuel, the NDMA said.
