Australia, UK, US Alliance To Develop Hypersonic Missiles
- The United States, United Kingdom, and Australia have announced they will work together via the recently created security alliance known as AUKUS to develop hypersonic missiles.
- The move comes amid growing concern by the US and allies about China’s growing military assertiveness in the Pacific.
- US President Biden, British PM, and Australian PM announced the plan after holding a check-in on the progress of AUKUS, the Indo-Pacific alliance that was launched by the three countries in September.
- The leaders said in a joint statement they are “committed today to commence new trilateral cooperation on hypersonic and counter-hypersonic, and electronic warfare capabilities, as well as to expand information sharing and to deepen cooperation on defense innovation.”
- The Russian military has said that its Avangard system is capable of flying 27 times faster than the speed of sound and making sharp maneuvers on its way to a target to dodge the enemy’s missile shield.
The US Announces Extra $100 Mn in Military Aid To Ukraine
- The United States announced Tuesday it will send $100 million in additional anti-armor weapons to Ukraine.
- Pentagon spokesman John Kirby, in a separate statement, said that the extra funding would be used “to meet an urgent Ukrainian need for additional Javelin anti-armor systems.”
- On April 1, the Pentagon announced an extra $300 million in military assistance.
- Kirby said the latest tranche brought the US military aid to Ukraine to “more than $1.7 billion since the beginning of Russia’s premeditated and unprovoked invasion on February 24,” and more than $2.4 billion.
Indo-Israel Bilateral Workshop On Quantum Technologies
- A two-day Indo-Israel Bilateral workshop on Quantum Technologies (I2QT-2022), organised by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and DRDO-Industry-Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE), IIT Delhi has concluded in New Delhi on April 06, 2022.
- The objective of the workshop was to deliberate on quantum technologies, evolve a joint quantum technology roadmap, and plan for developing technologies by collaboration b/w both countries.
- The workshop was the next step of the Bilateral Innovation Agreement (BIA) signed between DRDO, India, and Directorate of Defense Research & Development, Israel in November 2021 to promote innovation and accelerated R&D in startups and MSMEs of both countries.
- The workshop was attended by Indian and Israeli delegations consisting of academic experts, R&D professionals and Industry partners. Total 175 experts and scientists from Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Tirupati, Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER), Jaypee Institute of Information Technology (JPIT) Noida, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), Centre for Development of Telematics (CDoT) and Department of Space participated in this workshop.
INDIA – KYRGYZSTAN JOINT SPECIAL FORCES EXERCISE Concludes
- The 9th Edition of the India – Kyrgyzstan Joint Special Forces Exercise which commenced on 25 Mar 2022 at Special Forces Training School, Bakloh (HP) culminated on 06 April 2022.
- Over the past two weeks, Special Forces contingents from India and Kyrgyzstan shared their expertise and best practices of tactics, techniques and procedures to counter existing and emergent threats across the entire spectrum of conflict.
- Besides sharing special skills and techniques between participating Special Forces contingents, the joint training further strengthened the existing bond between India and Kyrgyzstan that has fostered over years of mutual respect for strategic autonomy, democratic values and zero tolerance for terrorism.
Raksha Mantri Addresses IAF Commanders’ Conference
- Rajnath Singh, inaugurated the Air Force Commanders’ Conference (AFCC) at Air Headquarters in New Delhi. The conference was attended by Hon’ble Raksha Rajya Mantri, Ajay Bhatt and Defence Secretary, along with senior commanders of the IAF.
- To provide a boost to the growing indigenous drone industry, Hon’ble Raksha Mantri launched the “MEHAR BABA COMPETITION – II“. The competition is aimed at developing technology for a “Swarm Drone based system to detect Foreign Objects on Aircraft Operating Surfaces”.
- The theme for this Conference is Optimising human resources and the focus will be on conduct of operations in a smart and efficient manner.
- During the three-day conference, the Air Force Commanders will discuss important issues related to future challenges in a Hi-tech and evolving operational scenario. The theme for this Conference is ‘Optimising human resources’ and the focus will be on conduct of operations in a smart and efficient manner. Mitigation of threats posed by drones will also be brainstormed during the conference.
Rajnath Singh To Release Third Positive Indigenisation List of Major Equipment
- In another major step to achieve ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, Ministry of Defence is coming out with third positive indigenisation list. Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh will release, in New Delhi on April 07, 2022, the third list comprising major equipment/platforms, which are scheduled to be completely indigenised by December 2025.
- The third list will consist of over 100 items, including complex equipment and systems which are being developed and likely to translate into firm orders over the next five years. Orders worth more than Rs 2,10,000 crore are likely to be placed in the industry in the next five years as part of the items covered in the third list.
- With the notification, over 300 sophisticated items will be covered, ranging from complex weapon systems to critical platforms such as Armoured vehicles, combat aircraft, submarines, etc.

- Lt Gen PS Minhas took over as the Commandant of OTA Gaya on 6 Apr. The General Officer was awarded the coveted ‘Sword of Honour’ at IMA Dehradun. Before taking over as Commandant he has had successful tenures of 1 year each as GOC Konark Corps & GOC Madhya Bharat Area.
- Officers Training Academy (OTA) Gaya is a premier Pre-Commission Training Academy (PCTA) of the Indian Army, established in the erstwhile location of the Army Service Corps (ASC) Centre (North).
HAL Has Entered into An Mou With IAI
- In a significant development, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to convert civil passenger aircraft to Multi-Mission Tanker Transport (MMTT) aircraft in India. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has been looking to procure new mid-air refuellers for some time.
- “Under the pact signed recently, HAL will convert pre-owned civil (passenger) aircraft into air refueling aircraft with cargo and transport capabilities. The move will provide India’s defence ecosystem with new capabilities and cost-effective solutions in the market,”
- The IAF presently has six Russian IL-78 tankers and has been looking to procure six new aircraft for sometime, but the deal has been repeatedly delayed. It has been looking to reissue the tender but the financial crunch had made it rethink the acquisition. To meet requirements in the interim, it has been looking at leasing some mid-air refuellers, an option introduced in the Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020.
RAdm Sanjay Sadhu Took Over as The Admiral Superintendent Naval Dockyard Visakhapatnam
- Rear Admiral Sanjay Sadhu on Wednesday took charge as the Admiral Superintendent of the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam from Rear Admiral I.B. Uthaiah.
- Rear Admiral Sanjay Sadhu was commissioned into the Indian Navy in November 1987. The Flag Officer holds a degree in Marine Engineering, a master’s in mechanical engineering. He has been awarded an M. Phil in Defence and Strategic Studies.
- During his career spanning 34 years, the Rear Admiral has held several operational, dockyard, design, and staff positions. He has served onboard the aircraft carrier Viraat for five years and frontline frigates such as INS Dunagiri and INS Brahmaputra.
