Rabindranath Tagore Remembered On His Jayanthi

  • Rabindranath Tagore (7 May 1861 – 7 August 1941) was also referred to as ‘Gurudev’, ‘Kabiguru’, and ‘Biswakabi’.
  • Regarded as the outstanding creative artist of modern India and hailed by W.B Yeats, Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali poet, novelist, and painter, who was highly influential in introducing Indian culture to the west.
  • Rabindranath was an exceptional literary figure and a renowned polymath who singlehandedly reshaped the region’s literature and music.
  • In 1913 Rabindranath Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his work on Gitanjali.
  • He was the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize.
  • In 1915 Tagore was awarded a knighthood by the British King George V. In 1919, following the Jallianwala Bagh massacre he renounced his Knighthood.
  • Besides all his literary achievements he was also a philosopher and educationist who in 1921 established the Vishwa-Bharati University, a university that challenged conventional education.
  • Rabindranath Tagore was a good friend of Mahatma Gandhi and is said to have given him the title of Mahatma.
  • Tagore had always stressed that unity in diversity is the only possible way for India’s national integration.
  • He not only gave the national anthems for two countries, India and Bangladesh but also inspired a Ceylonese student of his, to pen and compose the national anthem of Sri Lanka.

Remembrance Of Lost Lives During The WW II

  • Every year during May 8-9, the United Nations marks the Time of Remembrance and reconciliation for those who lost their lives during the Second World War. The day pays tribute to all the victims of the Second World War. This year is the 77th Anniversary of World War II.
  • The day was declared in 2004 and was commemorated by the United Nations since then. However, the UN urged the NGOs, its member countries, and other organizations to join the commemoration of the day through a resolution that was passed in 2010. The date, however, is not the official end of the second world war. This is because, Japan did not surrender till August 15, 1945.

World Thalassemia Day

  • World Thalassemia Day is celebrated on May 8 every year to commemorate Thalassemia victims and to encourage those who struggle to live with the disease. The theme for 2022 World Thalassemia Day is “Be Aware. Share. Care: Working with the global community as one to improve thalassemia knowledge.‘’
  • Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that is characterized by less hemoglobin and lesser than normal blood cells. A person suffering from thalassemia has at least one of the parents as a carrier of the disease.

Mother’s Day Celebrated Across The World

  • Every year on the second Sunday in May, Mother’s Day is celebrated in India. The day is commemorated to honour the existence of mothers and their significance in people’s lives.
  • Mothers have different roles in our lives, from being a caregiver to becoming a protector, from being a friend to a mentor.
  • This day is observed in more than 50 countries around the world. The celebration of motherhood has long been a part of human history, but it was not until 1908 that the US established a day dedicated completely to mothers.
  • After her mother died in 1905, an American woman called Anna Jarvis wanted to set aside a day to honour the work and sacrifices made by mothers.
  • As a result, she held the first formal Mother’s Day celebration in Grafton, West Virginia, in May 1908.
  • Soon after, it grew into a full-fledged movement, with Anna and her friends writing to prominent personalities in the US to demand that the day be declared a national holiday.
  • By 1911, it had spread to every state in the country. Finally, in 1914, then US President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May to be celebrated as Mother’s Day.
  • The celebrations quickly spread beyond national borders and into other countries. The days, however, are different in various countries.

ISRO’s Venus Mission 2024

  • ISRO Chairman S Somnath has announced that it is expecting to launch the Venus mission by December 2024.
  • The aim of the mission is to study Venus’ atmosphere, which is toxic and corrosive in nature as clouds of sulfuric acid cover the planet.
  • Earlier, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced two new robotic missions (DaVinci Plus and Veritas) to Venus.
  • Objectives of the Mission:
  • Investigation of surface process and shallow subsurface stratigraphy.
  • Until now, no prior observation of the sub-surface of Venus has been done.
  • Stratigraphy is a branch of geology in which rock layers and layering are studied.
  • Study of the structure, composition, and dynamics of the atmosphere.
  • Investigation of Solar wind interaction with the Venusian ionosphere.

World Food Prize 2022

  • World Food Prize Foundation announced the name of World Food Prize laureate 2022, Dr. Cynthia Rosenzweig of the United States.
  • Rosenzweig was selected for the award for her research to understand the relationship between climate and food systems and forecast how both will change in the future.
  • In 2021 Leading nutrition expert Dr. Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted won the prize and in 2020 Indian-American soil scientist – Dr. Rattan Lal won the prize.
  • The Prize is presented each October on or around UN World Food Day (16th October).

Khelo India Mascot And Logo Launched

  • In Haryana, the Mascot, Logo and Jersey and theme song of Khelo India Youth Games were launched in a special ceremony held at Indradhanush Stadium in Panchkula.
  • Chief Minister Manohar Lal along with Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Anurag Thakur launched the Mascot and Logo and theme song on this occasion.
  • They were accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala and Haryana Sports Minister Sandeep Singh and other dignitaries.
  • More than 8,000 athletes will be participating in the Khelo India Youth Games scheduled to take place from 4th to 13th of June at Panchkula, Ambala, Shahbad, Chandigarh, and Delhi.

Logo Design Contest For India’s G-20 Presidency

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged the people to participate in the Logo Design Contest for the G-20 Presidency of India. In a tweet today, Mr. Modi said, it is a special competition that celebrates the creativity of country’s youth.
  • The Logo Design Contest window is open for the participants from today to 7th of next month.
  • India will hold the Presidency of the G-20, for the first time, from 1st December 2022 to 30 November 2023 culminating in the G-20 Summit in 2023. During its Presidency, India will set the agenda for the year and have an opportunity to shape discussions and outcomes in a range of global issues.
  • Ministry of External Affairs has invited logo designs for the forthcoming G-20 Presidency of India. The first winner will get prize of one lakh 50 thousand rupees and the next five best entries will receive 15 thousand rupees each.
  • Logo design should reflect Amritkaal-India’s next 25 years’ journey till 100 years, which is both futuristic and inclusive.
  • The logo design should also include artistic expressions of colour combination and arrangements in the National Tricolour. Also, G-20 should be reflected prominently in the logo.

Asian Games In China Postponed

  • The Hangzhou Asian Games in China have been postponed indefinitely because of concerns over the spreading Omicron variant in China.
  • The 2022 Asian Games was scheduled to be hosted in East China’s Hangzhou, a city in Zhejiang 200 kilometers from COVID-hit Shanghai, from 10 to 25 September.
  • The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced that the new dates for the games will be announced later.
  • Also the International University Sports Federation (FISU) announced that the Chengdu 2021 World University Games has been again postponed until 2023 which had already been rescheduled for the summer of 2021 to June 2022 following the postponement of the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.
