VISIT OF 1TS TO JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA

  • The ships of First Training Squadron are on a visit to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia as part of their five-nation Overseas Deployment.
  • Issues of bilateral Naval cooperation and training initiatives between the two countries were discussed. During the visit, the ships will be involved in interaction with officials from Royal Navy of Saudi Arabia and various other dignitaries as well as training exchange.
  • India – Saudi Arabia Ties:
  • Crude oil Supplier: Saudi Arabia is currently India’s second-largest supplier of crude oil (Iraq has been India’s top supplier).
  • Saudi Arabia is keen to play a role in the creation of Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPRs) at Padur in Karnataka.
  • A study is being conducted for the setting up of the world’s largest greenfield refinery at Raigarh in Maharashtra by Saudi Aramco, Adnoc of the United Arab Emirates and Indian public sector oil companies.
  • Bilateral Trade: Saudi Arabia is India’s fourth-largest trade partner (after China, USA and Japan). The bilateral trade was valued at US $33.07 billion during FY 2019-20.
  • During the same period, India’s imports from Saudi Arabia reached US $26.84 billion and exports to Saudi Arabia were worth US$ 6.24 billion registering an increase of 12.18% over last year.
  • Indian Diaspora: The 2.6 million-strong Indian community in Saudi Arabia is the largest expatriate community in the Kingdom and is the ‘most preferred community’ due to their expertise, sense of discipline, law-abiding and peace-loving nature.
  • Cultural Linkages: Haj pilgrimage is another important component of bilateral relations between India and Saudi Arabia.
  • Naval Exercise: Recently, India and Saudi Arabia started their first-ever Naval joint exercise called the Al-Mohed Al-Hindi Exercise.

Visit Of INS Kolkata to Djibouti

  • INS Kolkata visited Djibouti from 04 – 07 May 22, as part of the anti-piracy patrol being undertaken by the Indian Navy to ensure safe transit of merchant vessels in the Gulf of Aden.
  • Captain Prashant Handu, the Commanding Officer called on Colonel Ahmed Daher Djama, Commander of the National Navy of Djibouti and Colonel Wais Omar Bogoreh, Commander-in-Chief of Djibouti Coast Guard during the visit.
  • Both dignitaries also visited INS Kolkata, along with personnel from the Djibouti Navy and Coast Guard. The courtesy and camaraderie exhibited by the Djibouti Coast Guard and Navy to INS Kolkata reflects the strong friendship they share with the Indian Navy.
  • “Indian Navy warships have been deployed in the Gulf of Aden since Oct 2008 for anti-piracy patrol to ensure safe transit of merchant vessels”.
  • The “Kolkata class” (Project 15A) are a class of stealth guided missile destroyers constructed for the Indian Navy. The class comprises three ships – Kolkata, Kochi and Chennai, all of which were built by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in India and are the largest destroyers to be operated by the Indian Navy. Due to delays in construction and sea trials, the initial commissioning date of the first ship of the class was pushed back from 2010 to 2014

Amid Ukraine-Russia war, IAF’s Rs 35,000 cr plan to upgrade Su-30 fighter fleet put on backburner

  • Amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Indian Air Force’s plans to upgrade the fleet of its Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft has been put on the backburner for now.
    • The deal for the 12 most advanced Su-30MKI aircraft worth over Rs 20,000 crore would also be delayed slightly as the stakeholders will now have to add more Made-in-India content in the planes as per the current policy of the government to promote Indian defence products over imports
    • The Indian Air Force was planning to upgrade 85 of their planes up to the latest standards in collaboration with the Russians and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The plan has been put on the backburner for now in view of the present situation.
    • The Su-30 MKIs form the mainstay of the Indian Air Force as 272 of them have been ordered by the IAF in different batches as every time shortage of fighter jets in service was highlighted, the Russian manufacturers would receive an order of 30 to 40 of these planes.

VCOAS Visits Forward Locations Along LoC in J-K

  • VCOAS Lt. Gen BS Raju on Sunday visited forward locations along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir and reviewed the security situation and operational preparedness.
  • The Vice Chief of Army Staff appreciated the efforts of the formations in maintaining security with a robust anti-infiltration grid.
  • Earlier on Saturday, Lieutenant General Raju inaugurated the North Tech Symposium 2022 organised by Northern Command.
  • The two-day event is based on the theme ‘Empowering Northern Theatre with Contemporary Technologies to meet dynamic Operational Challenges’.

DRDO developing Unified Common Launcher for Astra Air to Air Missile  

  • To ensure compatibility of a single launcher across the existing platforms of the IAF, DRDO has taken up the Design and Development of a Unified Common Launcher for AAM which is compatible across the platforms.
  • Missiles are generally not mounted directly to an aircraft, but rather are mounted to launchers that are fixed to the aircraft. In this manner, the missile can be launched from the launcher, while the launcher remains fixed to the aircraft.
  • New Unified Common Launcher will be compatible with both Rail launched (Astra Mk1) and Ejector launched (Astra Mk2/Mk3) Air to Air missiles.

MHA launches ‘CAPF Punarvaas’ to facilitate retired CAPF, the Assam Rifle personnel

  • With an aim to facilitate retired Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and Assam Rifle personnel to secure employment with private security agencies, the Ministry of Home Affairs has launched ‘CAPF Punarvaas’ through the Welfare and Rehabilitation Board (WARB).
  • The portal will help retired personnel seeking re-employment to find an appropriate match by uploading their personal details on the WARB website along with their area of expertise and preferred employment location.
  • With the increase in the number of business establishments requiring security services, there has been a substantial growth of PSAs, increasing the requirement of security personnel.
