Vice Chief Lt Gen Manoj Pande all set to become next Army Chief
- Vice Chief Lieutenant General, Manoj Pande is all set to become Chief of the Army Staff as the incumbent Army Chief General M.M. Naravane, who is being seen as the frontrunner for the Chief of Defence Staff’s post, is due to retire by the end of this month.
- Being senior-most in the office after General Naravane, Lt Gen Pande will take over the reign.
- Lt Gen Pande became the senior-most after a few top officers retired in the last three months. The incumbent Lt Gen Raj Shukla who was commanding Army’s training command (ARTRAC) retired on March 31.
- Meanwhile, present Army Chief, Gen MM Naravane is ahead in the race for the post of Chief of Defence Staff after the post fell vacant in December last year as the then CDS, General Bipin Rawat passed away in a helicopter crash near Coimbatore.
DRDO Conducts Successful Flight Test of Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet
- DRDO on Friday successfully tested the flight trial of the Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) booster from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) Chandipur off the Odisha coast.
- SFDR has been developed by Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories such as RCI, Hyderabad and HEMRL, Pune.
- Defence Ministry said, the SFDR-based propulsion enables the missile to intercept aerial threats at very long range at supersonic speeds. The SFDR has been developed by Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Hyderabad in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories such as Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, Pune.
India, US To Hold 2+2 Dialogue
- India and the US are set to hold the 2+2 dialogue between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar and their respective American counterparts on April 11
- “The Dialogue would enable both sides to undertake a comprehensive review of cross-cutting issues in the India-US bilateral agenda related to foreign policy, defence and security with the objective of providing strategic guidance and a vision for further consolidating the relationship,” a Ministry of External Affairs said.
- “The 2+2 Ministerial is an important opportunity to advance our shared objectives across the breadth of the US-India Strategic Partnership, including enhancing our people-to-people ties and education cooperation, building diverse, resilient supply chains for critical and emerging technology, scaling up our climate action and public health cooperation, and developing a trade and investment partnership to increase prosperity for working families in both countries,” the US statement said.
- The last 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue between the two countries was held in October 2020 in New Delhi.
ITP Aero launches new India office in Hyderabad
- The World’s leading aircraft engine and component manufacturing company ITP Aero on Wednesday announced the launch of its new India office in Hyderabad. The company’s new office space at IDA Gandhinagar in Hyderabad was inaugurated.
- ITP Aero operates in India through its fully-owned subsidiary ITP Externals India Pvt Ltd which employs more than 160 personnel in Hyderabad.
- Speaking on the occasion, Praveen said: “Telangana is now the “Best State” in India for aerospace and aviation sector, as adjudged by the Union Government, and Hyderabad has firmly established itself as the hub of the aviation industry.
- The recent success of “Wings India 2002”, the fifth edition of the biennial national civil aviation show is a pointer in this direction.
- ITP Aero is a world-leading aircraft engine and component manufacturing company, with revenues over 1 B$ and facilities in Spain, the UK, Mexico, Malta, and India. ITP Aero develops technology to drive the aerospace industry towards a more sustainable future.
Lt Gen ADS Aujla to Be Next Chinar Corps Commander
- Counter insurgency operations expert Lieutenant General ADS Aujla has been appointed as the next commander of the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps. The officer has commanded a division in the Kashmir valley and has vast experience in counterterrorism and counter-infiltration operations
- Aujla would succeed Lt Gen Devendra Pratap Pandey in Chinar Corps who is moving to the Army War College in Mhow as its Commandant.
- Aujla belongs to the Rajputana Rifles regiment of the Indian Army and commanded the 15th battalion of the infantry regiment.
- The Chinar Corps is the Indian Army’s main formation tasked with combating terrorism and counter-infiltration operations in the Kashmir valley and along the Line of Control with Pakistan.
Indian Navy Pilots & Operators Complete Training In US
- The first batch of pilots and sensor operators of the Navy have completed training in the US on the submarine-hunting MH-60 “Romeo” multi-mission helicopters, which will begin arriving in India in another three to four months.
- India has ordered 24 of the heavy-duty helicopters, equipped with multi-mode radars and night-vision devices as well as armed with Hellfire missiles, MK-54 torpedoes and precision-kill rockets, under the Rs 15,157 crore ($2.13 billion) contract inked with the US in February 2020.
- The 140-warship Navy is currently grappling with just a handful of old anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters like Kamov-28s and Sea Kings when the presence of Chinese nuclear and diesel-electric submarines is only going to further increase in the IOR in the coming years.
- After the first 24 MH-60Rs, the Navy has projected a long-term requirement for another 123 naval multi-role helicopters (NMRHs). The MH-60Rs are a replacement for the older Sea King 42/42A helicopters that were retired in the 1990s.
- The IAF has already inducted 22 Apache attacks (for Rs 13,952 crore) and 15 heavy-lift Chinook (Rs 8,048 crore) choppers, both produced by Boeing. The Army, in turn, is slated to get six Apaches under a Rs 5,691 crore ($796 million) deal, which was also inked in February 2020.
