77th World Health Assembly
- International Health Regulations of 2005 are amended by the 77th World Health Assembly, taking into account 300 recommendations from member states. The purpose of amendments is to strengthen nations’ capacity to anticipate and address pandemic and public health emergencies of global concern.
- They contain measures to support developing nations in creating, bolstering, and preserving the fundamental capacities mandated by the IHR, as well as measures to enable fair access to pertinent health items during medical emergencies.
- Amendments aim at improving countries’ ability to prepare for and respond to Public Health Emergencies of International Concern and Pandemic Emergencies. They include provisions for facilitating equitable access to relevant health products during health emergencies, as well as mobilizing financial resources to support developing countries in building, strengthening, and maintaining the core capacities required under the IHR.
- In its 77th session, the theme for this year’s event is “Health For All: All for Health”. To have a deeper comprehension of the risks to and effects of global healthcare.
- Key threats to global health are identified in the paper Shaping the Future of Health and Healthcare, along with possible solutions. World Health Assembly is the governing body of the World Health Organization (WHO), an organization under the United Nations (UN) that is tasked with advancing global health and ensuring that everyone has access to the best possible medical treatment.
Fire Rescue Drone
- Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad, directed by Profs. Sudheer Siddapureddy and Ameer Mulla, with funding from the TiHAN Foundation, IIT Hyderabad (NMICPS, Indian government), has created a drone for fire rescue assistance.
- During the two-day workshop on Drone design and autonomous navigation in fire rescue (DDANFR 2024), organized by the Fire and Thermal Research Laboratory (FLRL) and the Control System and Robotics Laboratory at IIT Dharwad on May 31 and June 1, there was an unveiling and demonstration of what is purported to be the first fire rescue assistance drone.
- Drones with thermal cameras installed on them, or drones with thermal imaging capabilities, are frequently used by firefighters.
- The infrared radiation that objects, including flames, emanate can be detected and captured by the specialist thermal sensors fitted to these drones.
- Thermal drones assist firefighters with hotspot identification, fire spread tracking, and flame intensity assessment by evaluating temperature differences in the acquired photos.
- Especially at night or in low visibility situations, thermal drones are extremely useful for early fire detection, situational awareness, and assisting firefighting efforts.
- Fighting fires in challenging environments requires a drone that can fly through tight spaces and hot weather. Professor Siddapureddy discussed the challenges involved in creating a device that is both incredibly compact and powerful. Important contributions came from the Fire and Thermal Research Laboratory (FTRL), which created flexible protection shields after extensive fire testing and sensors resistant to soot.
- The guidance issue in smoke-filled areas was further discussed by the Expert Professor, marking a significant advancement over the Control Systems and Robotics Laboratory’s work. In addition to helping in fire situations, this technology might also be used to manage large crowds in areas like train stations, malls, and pilgrim centers, improving their safety and effectiveness.
PraVaHa Software
- ISRO, through its Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), has introduced the PraVaHa software, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tool aimed at facilitating aerodynamic design and analysis for aerospace vehicles.
- PraVaHa, acronym for “Parallel RANS Solver for Aerospace Vehicle Aero-thermo-dynamic Analysis,” is tailored to simulate both external and internal flows on various types of vehicles, including launch vehicles, winged, and non-winged re-entry vehicles.
- This CFD software enables the understanding of airflow around aircraft, rocket bodies, and Crew Modules during earth re-entry, crucial for shaping design elements such as structure and Thermal Protection Systems (TPS). It addresses the challenges posed by unsteady aerodynamics, including flow disturbances and acoustic noise generation during missions.
- PraVaHa leverages advancements in CFD technology, offering accurate predictions for complex aerodynamic flows and faster simulation turnaround times, particularly on High-Performance Computing Clusters. Its versatility extends to CPU and GPU architectures, making it adaptable to current and upcoming supercomputing facilities.
Gudleppa Hallikeri Award 2024
- Poet and playwright Siddhalinga Pattanashetti has been chosen for the prestigious Gudleppa Hallikeri Award for 2024 by the Gudleppa Hallikeri Memorial Foundation, Hosaritti (Haveri District).
- This is the 19th award and will be presented in the honour of the birth anniversary of Gudleppa Hallikeri on 6 June.
- Indian freedom fighter Gudleppa Hallikeri (1906–1972) was a native of Hosaritti, in the Haveri district of the state of Karnataka. In Hosaritti, he founded the Gandhi Grameena Gurukul, a residential school. Hallikeri used nonviolent protests and peace demonstrations to collaborate with numerous other liberation fighters, including Mailara Mahadevappa, Sanikoppa, and Mahatma Gandhi.
- In his last hometown of Hubli, there is a life-size iron wrought statue of Hallikeri. Hallikeri and Aluru Venkata Rao collaborated actively on the unification of Karnataka.
- One of the colleges in North Karnataka bearing his name is the Gudleppa Hallikeri Arts, Science & Commerce College, run by the Karnatak Lingayat Education Society, located in Haveri.
- The Gudleppa Hallikeri Award honors those who have made significant achievements to literature, society, or social service. It bears the name of Gudleppa Hallikeri, a well-known liberation warrior who shared Mahatma Gandhi’s beliefs.
Rs 10,000-Crore Project to Combat Air Pollution
- Haryana Chief Secretary T V S N Prasad announced the launch of a Rs 10,000-crore project funded by the World Bank to address air pollution in the state. The Haryana Clean Air Project for Sustainable Development will be rolled out in phases, starting with districts in the National Capital Region (NCR).
- The initial phase of the project focuses on upgrading Haryana’s air quality monitoring infrastructure. This includes establishing a state-of-the-art laboratory and modernizing existing ones. Additionally, a dedicated program management unit will oversee implementation, alongside training programs for stakeholders involved in air quality management.
- The project allocates resources to tackle various sources of air pollution, including transportation, industry, construction, road dust, biomass burning, and household pollution.
- Efforts will promote cleaner vehicles, incentivize the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), and phase out older, more polluting vehicles. A model for automated testing stations (ATS) will be developed to monitor vehicle health.
- Industries will be encouraged to transition to clean energy through financial incentives and the promotion of cleaner fuels. Initiatives will also focus on increasing green spaces in urban areas through the establishment of biodiversity parks and green belts.
KAZA Summit 2024
- KAZA 2024 Heads of State Summit ended in the Zambian resort town of Livingstone on May 31, with leaders of the five member countries agreeing to argue their case for lifting of the ban on ivory trade at the 20th meeting of the Conference of Parties (CoP20) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) due next year in Geneva, Switzerland.
- Similar to this summit, Southern African nations promoted the legalization of the ivory trade at the 2022 Conference of Parties in Panama in order to fund conservation efforts and lessen conflicts between people and wildlife.
- They had significant populations of elephants and faced other difficulties, but their proposal was turned down because these countries said it put anti-trade beliefs ahead of scientific conservation techniques.
- Surrounding the Okavango and Zambezi river basins, KAZA-TFCA extends over five southern African countries: Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. With 85 forest reserves and 103 wildlife management areas, around 70% of the land in the Kazakh Archipelago is protected. Around 2/3 of Africa’s elephant population, or 450,000, is found in this region. Notably, large chunks of this population are found in Botswana (132,000) and Zimbabwe (100,000) alone.
National Space Agency, KASA
- South Korea has officially launched its space agency, the Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA), to lead policy and industrial development in its aerospace sector.
- The establishment was made possible after the Country’s national assembly passed a special law in January to unify government organizations in charge of space policy and projects.
- The new agency is based in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, with an annual budget of 758.9 billion won ($556 million). The Korea Aerospace Administration (KASA) will lead the country’s “space economy,” with hundreds of businesses and enterprises working to catapult South Korea into the ranks of the world’s top five space powers, Yoon said.
- “KASA will usher in a new space era by cultivating experts while intensively supporting the aerospace industry ecosystem and fostering challenging and innovative R&D,” Yoon said.
- The country’s first lunar lander is planned for 2032. South Korea became the seventh country to own an indigenous space launch vehicle and satellite development technology with the launch of the Nuri rocket in May last year that put a commercial grade satellite in orbit.
- The agency is aimed at streamlining policy and development functions shared among different government ministries and will bring under its structure the aerospace research institute that developed the Nuri and its precursor space launch vehicles.
- South Korea plans at least three more space launches by 2027 and has plans to launch military satellites.
