Conservation Grant

  • European Commission (EC) has made a significant decision regarding Tanzania’s eligibility for a conservation grant under its NaturAfrica initiative.
  • This decision has implications for conservation efforts in East Africa, particularly concerning the Eastern Rift Savannahs and Watersheds (ERiSaWa) component of the initiative.
image 280
  • The NaturAfrica program, funded by the EC, aims to conserve biodiversity and promote sustainable development in key African landscapes. It targets specific areas known as Key Landscapes for Conservation and Development (KLCDs). NaturAfrica strives to balance environmental protection, support local livelihoods, and ensure good governance for vital ecosystems.
  • Human Rights Violations: The EC’s decision stemmed from well-documented human rights abuses associated with the forced eviction of Maasai communities from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Loliondo in Tanzania. Advocacy groups like the Maasai International Solidarity Alliance (MISA) and Survival International played a crucial role in raising awareness about these violations.

Best Business Regulator Award

  • According to The Asian Banker, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) was recently given the “Best Conduct of Business Regulator” award for the Asia-Pacific area.
  • This award, which was given in an event in Hong Kong, shows how important SEBI has been in improving the rules that govern Indian stock markets.
  • Kamlesh Chandra Varshney, a Permanent Member of SEBI, accepted the award on behalf of the organization. SEBI has taken several important steps that have made the Indian stock market much more efficient and trustworthy.

  • The introduction of the T+1 settlement method is one of the important projects. This method, which began to be put in place gradually in 2021 and was fully operational by January 2023, has greatly cut the time it takes for investors to get to their money after trading, which has increased market liquidity and efficiency.
  • The Asian Banker pointed out that SEBI has not only made the market more efficient through strict enforcement and new regulatory practices, but it has also made sure that customers are treated fairly and kept the market’s integrity strong.
image 282
  • These efforts have raised the bar for doing business in India’s financial markets, making them more in line with best practices around the world.
  • The T+1 settlement cycle is the process by which trades in assets are settled one business day after they happen. The goal of this method is to make markets work better and lower the risks that come with trade settlements.
  • Key global markets, including the U.S., came up with T+1, which will require a lot less capital to clear trades. The U.S. plans to fully adopt it in 2024. In addition, it could affect liquidity by making banking processes go faster.
  • In the past, the change from T+2 to T+1 has been made possible by improvements in digital technology and changes to the rules to allow for faster payments. The change is part of a larger effort to improve the infrastructure of financial markets in reaction to more trading and the need for more resilience.

Panama Evacuates Island

  • As a result of higher sea levels, Panama is currently dealing with a major effect of climate change by moving a whole island community. The native Guna people of Gardi Sugdub, an island in the Guna Yala archipelago in Panama’s Caribbean region, are taking a step that has never been done before.
  • There is a small island called Gardi Sugdub that is about 400 yards long and 150 yards wide. Climate change poses serious risks to the community, especially from rising sea levels that flood the area often and let saltwater into freshwater reserves. These changes to the environment are wearing away at the island’s base and polluting the resources that the native people depend on to stay alive.
image 285
  • Because the situation is so bad, the Panamanian government has started a plan to move about 300 Guna people to new homes on the mainland in Carti Sugtupu, which is part of the Indigenous Guna Yala Comarca. This move is part of a bigger plan to protect the lives of the Guna people and stop the terrible loss of villages. Approximately $1.2 billion will be needed to pay for this huge move.
  • The evacuation is more than just moving families from one place to another; it’s a huge change in culture and feeling. The Guna people have a complex relationship with their environment that is rooted in their way of life, way of making a living, and customs. Cutting ties with their ancestral lands and the ocean upsets this relationship.
