Army Gets Nagastra-1, India’s First Indigenous Suicide Drone
- In a significant stride towards achieving ‘atmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in ammunition and defence systems, the Indian Army is set to induct its first indigenous loiter munition, Nagastra-1. Developed by Solar Industries, Nagpur, the Army has placed a supply order for Economics Explosives Ltd (EEL), a 100 per cent subsidiary of Solar Industries, to supply 480 loiter munitions.
- Following a successful Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) from May 20-25, EEL delivered the first batch of 120 units to the ammunition depot at Pulgaon. The Nagastra-1 excels in “kamikaze mode” by neutralising hostile threats with GPS-enabled precision strikes, boasting an accuracy of up to two metres.
- Weighing 9 kg, this man-portable fixed-wing electric UAV has an endurance of 30 minutes. It offers a 15 km range with man-in-loop control and extends up to 30 km in autonomous mode. Due to its electric propulsion system, Nagastra-1 provides a low acoustic signature, making it almost undetectable at altitudes over 200 metres.

Pak Terrorist Organisations including LeT, TRF Target Jammu As Kashmir Remains ‘Pacified’: J&K Police Chief
- Amid rising cases of terrorism, law enforcement agencies believe that the ongoing jihadi escalation in Jammu is happening as the terrorist organisation are trying to open their new base in Jammu region, reported ToI.
- “After the Valley is relatively pacified, terrorist outfits like Lashkar-e-Taiba have shifted attention to Jammu, activating different axes that run through Chenab, Tawi and Ujh-Ravi rivers. It is a determined effort on part of Pakistan-based elements to ratchet up things for reasons that include boosting morale of their fighters and creating inter-communal tension in a region with mixed population (by religion),” J&K police chief Swain told TOI over phone.
- Citing the difficult topography and demography of areas within Jammu (with a 60:40 Hindu-Muslim population), the chief believes that the terrorists may be trying to target civilians from a particular community with a design to spark communal unrest, thus creating a law and order challenge. He, however, said the lack of separatist sentiment in Jammu, unlike how things were in Kashmir, was one less headache for security forces.
- Forces chalk out strategy
- Highlighting futher on topography, Swain while talking about the recent deadly Reasi bus attack where nine people died said 70% of contiguous mountainous terrain. He added that difficult topography offers the hiding terrorists an advantage as there was invariably a time gap between information reaching the forces and follow-up action.
