North Korea Says Its Recent Missile Tests Involved New Ballistic Missile

  • North Korea said Tuesday it had test-fired a new tactical ballistic missile capable of carrying a huge warhead, as the country is pushing to modernize its weapons arsenal to cope with what it calls U.S.-led threats.
  • The North’s official Korean Central News Agency called the weapon Hwasongpho-11Da-4.5 which can carry 4.5 ton-class “super-large warhead.”
  • It said the test-fire on Monday was meant to verify flight stability and hit accuracy at the maximum range of 500 kilometers (310 miles) and the minimum range of 90 kilometers (55 miles).

India and Bangladesh Strengthened Defence Ties With New Naval Contracts

  • India and Bangladesh have signed a deal to boost bilateral defence industrial partnership, a development that came within a week of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s India trip.
  • The Bangladesh Navy on Sunday signed a contract for ‘Made in India’ 800 tonne oceangoing tug with India’s GRSE Ltd as part of the line of credit offered by India to its neighbour. The signing coincided with the visit of India’s chief of naval staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi to Bangladesh.
  • A few weeks ago, GRSE had signed another contract with Bangladesh for delivery of a trailing suction hopper (TSH) dredger.
  • Company said. “The platform will be extremely robust with a capability to operate even at sea state 5 (wind speeds of 17-21 knots and wave heights of 2-3 metres) with dynamic positioning – 2 system capability. This is an advanced computer-controlled system that allows a ship to maintain its heading and position without the use of mooring lines or anchors.”

Focus on Inducting Indigenous Weapons: Army Chief

  • The Army is on a path to transformation and will maximise the induction of indigenous weapon systems to be prepared for all operational challenges, General Upendra Dwivedi said on Monday in his first address after taking over as the 30th Chief of Army Staff.
  • “The Army is on the path to transformation and we aspire to be ‘Atmanirbhar’. We will encourage indigenous initiatives and induct maximum war systems and equipment that are manufactured in our country,” the army chief said.
  • “It will be my endeavour to ensure that the Indian Army is always ready to operate in the full spectrum of conflict, maintaining complete synergy with the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force and other stakeholders,” he said.
  • “This will ensure that India’s interests are secured and we become a major pillar of nation building to achieve the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat-2047’,” Gen Dwivedi said.

Pakistan Hands Over To India A List Of Missing Defence Personnel From 1965 And 1971 Wars

  • Pakistan on Monday handed over to India a list of defence personnel who went missing in the wars of 1965 and 1971 while exchanging the lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen in each other’s custody, the Foreign Office said.
  • India and Pakistan exchanged the lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen in each other’s custody through diplomatic channels simultaneously at New Delhi and Islamabad, it said.
  • Pakistan has handed over a list of 254 Indians or believed-to-be-Indian civilian prisoners and fishermen in Pakistani jails, while India shared a list of 452 Pakistani or believed-to-be-Pakistani civilian prisoners and fishermen in Indian jails, it said.”A list of 38 missing Pakistani defence personnel, believed to be in India’s custody since the wars of 1965 and 1971, was also handed over by Pakistan,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.
  • Under the provisions of the bilateral Agreement on Consular Access 2008, such lists are exchanged every year on January 1 and July 1.

Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani Assumes Charge

  • Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani on Monday assumed charge as the new Vice Chief of the Army Staff. The officer, who was helming the Army’s Central Command, succeeded Gen Upendra Dwivedi. Gen Dwivedi took charge as the Army Chief.
  • Lt Gen Subramani has an insightful knowledge and deep understanding of operational dynamics on both the Western and Northern borders, the Army said.
  • Lt Gen Subramani was commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in 1985. He has a distinguished and illustrious military career spanning more than 37 years.

SCO Chair Kazakhstan To Host Unique World Nomadic Games

Kazakhstan, which will host the SCO Summit this week, will be hosting a series of international meets this year including ‘World Nomadic Games’ to celebrate local and unique traditions.

A significant event will be the hosting of the World Nomadic Games in Kazakhstan. They are important both for promoting national sports and a healthy lifestyle and for expanding cultural and humanitarian ties between fraternal peoples, heirs of the nomadic civilization of the Great Steppe, according to Zhalgasbayev.

Membership:

The SCO has eight members, including China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Iran is the new member SCO.

Observers:

Afghanistan, Belarus, and Mongolia are observers who would like to follow Tehran.

Dialogue Partners:

The list of current and incipient dialogue partners includes Azerbaijan, Armenia, Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
