Accident Onboard INS Brahmaputra
- A fire had broken out onboard INS Brahmaputra, a multi-role Frigate, on the evening of 21 Jul 24 while she was undergoing refit at ND (Mbi), as reported earlier. The fire was brought under control by the ship’s crew with assistance of firefighters from Naval Dockyard, Mumbai {ND (Mbi)} and other ships in harbour, by morning of 22 Jul 24.
- Further, follow-on actions including sanitisation checks for assessment of residual risk of fire were carried out. Subsequently, in the afternoon, the ship experienced severe listing to one side (port side). Despite all efforts, the ship could not be brought to the upright position. The ship continued to list further alongside her berth and is presently resting on one side.
- All personnel have been accounted for except one junior sailor, for whom the search is in progress. An inquiry has been ordered by the Indian Navy to investigate the matter.
US, Japan to Hold High-level Security Talks On Nuclear Deterrence
- Foreign and defence ministers from Japan and the United States will hold security talks on July 28 that for the first time will cover “extended deterrence”, a term used to describe the U.S. commitment to use its nuclear forces to deter attacks on allies.
- While the pair have discussed the issue at lower levels before, the talks will elevate a subject that is sensitive in Japan, which has pushed for non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and is the only country to have suffered atomic bomb attacks.
- Washington and Tokyo in April announced an historic upgrade to the U.S.-Japan alliance, first signed in 1951, as the allies look to deter what they see as rising regional threats from China, Russia and North Korea.
- Japan provides a base for the U.S. to project its military power in Asia, hosting 54,000 American troops, hundreds of its aircraft and Washington’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier strike group.
India’s Defence Exports Skyrocket To $2.5 Billion in 2023-24
- India recorded its highest-ever defence exports, reaching $2.5 billion (Rs 20,915 crore) in the fiscal year 2023-24, as revealed by the Economic Survey 2023-24 presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Lok Sabha. This significant milestone marks a 25% increase from the $2 billion reported in FY23.
- MoD data highlighted a remarkable increase in India’s annual domestic defence production, which reached nearly Rs 1.27 trillion in FY24, a 16.7% rise from Rs 1.09 trillion in the previous fiscal year. This surge is attributed to substantial efforts by both the private defence sector and defence public sector undertakings.
- The Economic Survey reported a rise in the number of export authorisations issued to defence exporters. The number of authorisations grew from 1,414 in FY23 to 1,505 in FY24, representing a growth of approximately 6.6% year-on-year. This increase has facilitated the expansion of India’s defence exports.
- India’s defence industry, comprising around 100 domestic companies, exports a wide variety of products and equipment.
Sukhoi-30MKIs May Get A Rs 63,000 Crore High-tech Makeover Soon
- India is finalizing an extensive plan to upgrade its fleet of Russian-origin Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets, transforming them into advanced ‘Super’ Sukhois. This enhancement involves advanced radars, avionics, longer-range weapons, and multi-sensor fusion, significantly boosting their combat capabilities for the next 30 years.
- The defense ministry has prepared a draft note for the Prime Minister-led Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to approve the first phase of upgrades for 84 jets at a cost of around Rs 63,000 crore, sources told The Times of India.
- The ‘Super’ Sukhois will approach fifth-generation fighter capabilities, lacking only in stealth. “They will also have manned-unmanned teaming capability to operate with advanced autonomous drones using AI and data links”. The IAF aims to extend the operational life of these Sukhoi’s until 2055.
Military Exercise With “Real Combat Drills”
- Amid the growing threat from Chinese invasion, Taiwan starting Monday will begin military exercises to test its war fighting capabilities.
- The five-day drill is being held even as China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) flew a record number of aircraft close to the island this month. Beijing has also increased the number of naval vessels and coast guard vessels operating next to the self-governed island, which it views as part of its own territory.
- Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence said the annual Han Kuang and Wan An exercises, between July 22 and July 26, will focus on “unscripted and real combat drills.” Including drills such as shelter-in-place and air defence drill alerts.
- The Han Kuang exercises, Taiwan’s biggest annual defence drills, have been held every year since 1984 to test Taiwan’s combat readiness in the face of a possible Chinese invasion.
