Army Issues Rs 6,500 Crore Tender For Buying 400 Howitzers

  • The army has issued a tender to acquire next-generation artillery guns that will be designed, developed and manufactured in India. It requires 400 of these gun systems in the first phase though the demand could rise manifold in the coming years as legacy equipment is replaced.
  • “A tender for buying 400, 155-mm 52-calibre towed artillery gun systems (TAGS) along with towing vehicles from Indian firms under the Buy Indian-IDDM category has been issued,” senior military officials told ANI.
  • “The firms who have received the tender include local defence majors Bharat Forge, Larsen and Toubro, Adani, and Ordnance Factory Board,” they said.
  • The Indian Army has already issued a tender for buying 307 Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS) along with one for finding a mounted gun system for its requirements along borders with China and Pakistan.

India, Vietnam 4th ‘Maritime Security Dialogue’

  • The 4th India-Vietnam Maritime Security Dialogue was held on 16 August 2024, in Hanoi, Vietnam, during which the two sides discussed enhancing maritime cooperation and maritime law enforcement, the MEA said.
  • “During the dialogue, the two sides discussed the ways to enhance maritime cooperation in furthering a conducive environment for mutual growth and global well-being,” the MEA stated in the release.
  • They agreed to further strengthen their shared efforts in areas such as Marine Scientific Research, Ocean Economy, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief, Navy and Coast Guard cooperation and maritime law enforcement.
  • They welcomed the signing of the Plan of Action for the implementation of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the period of 2024-2028.

First Defence Minister-led Joint Commanders’ Conference

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to address all the top military commanders during the first ever Joint Commanders’ Conference planned to be held on September 4-5 in Lucknow.
  • The conference would be held with the theme “Sashakt aur Surakahit Bharat: Transforming the Armed Forces’ (String and Secure India: Transforming the Armed Forces’).
  • The Joint Commanders’ Conference led by the Defence Minister would be held every year by the forces, while the Combined Commanders’ Conference headed by the Prime Minister would be held every two years.
  • The last CCC meeting was held in Bhopal in March 2023 and the next one is expected to be held in March 2025.

Japan To Export Advanced Naval Antennas To India

  • Japan is set to supply advanced naval ship antennas to India, in a move aimed at enhancing defence capabilities and deterrence within the Indo-Pacific region.
  • This development, expected to be announced at the upcoming two-plus-two meeting between the foreign and defence ministers of both nations in New Delhi, marks a significant step in deepening defence cooperation between the two Quad allies.
  • The two-plus-two meeting, the first since September 2022, is also expected to reaffirm the commitment of both nations to uphold an international order based on the rule of law, particularly in the face of challenges posed by Russia’s actions in Ukraine and China’s military expansion.
  • The third round of India-Japan 2+2 Foreign and Defence Ministers’ Meeting will be held on August 20, the MEA announced. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will represent the Indian side and hold meeting with Japanese Defence Minister Minorou Kihara and Foreign minister.

DRDO Hands Over ‘Nipun’

  • DRDO has handed over the Authority Holding Sealed Particulars (AHSP) of ‘Nipun’ munition to  Directorate General of Quality Assurance (DGQA) at Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE), Pashan, Pune.
  • NIPUN is a Soft Target Munition designed and developed by the ARDE in association with High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), Pune.
  • NIPUN is a Soft Target Munition designed and developed by the ARDE in association with High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), Pune.
  • More than 20 lots of munitions have been delivered to the Indian Army till now. NIPUN is highly user-friendly and deadly against the enemy. It is completely safe during handling, transportation and laying.
