Trump Threatens Sweeping Tariffs On Russia
- US President Donald Trump on Wednesday urged his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to make a “deal” to stop the “ridiculous” war in Ukraine and threatened to impose “high levels” of tariffs on “anything being sold by Russia to the United States and other countries”.
- Posting on his Truth Social platform, the US president also emphasised his long-standing admiration for the Russian people and his past positive relationship with Putin.
- Settle now and stop this ridiculous war! It’s only going to get worse. If we don’t make a “deal,” and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries.
- Trump and his campaign had alleged that continued US aid for Ukraine helps fund a “corrupt” pro-war nexus of defence companies and foreign policy hawks in the Biden administration.
UP Govt Nod To New Aerospace and Defence Policy
- The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday approved a new Aerospace and Defence Unit policy to attract Rs 50,000 crore of investments and generate jobs for 1 lakh people.

Ministry of Defence Moves Ahead With Submarine Plan, MDL
- The defence ministry has moved ahead with a multi- billion dollar plan to construct next-generation conventional submarines in India, with Mazagaon Dockyards Limited qualifying after technical trials and moving to the next stage of techno-commercial negotiations.
- Sources said the bid by MDL in partnership with Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has been given the go ahead by a technical oversight committee that looked into the bidding process and trials carried out last year.As per the procurement process, the next stage will be to open the commercial bids that had been submitted by MDL. After going through the offer, detailed discussions on technical aspects and commercial terms will be carried out before the estimated ₹43,000 crore proposal will be moved for approvals to the competent authorities.
- Given the enormity of the project-six submarines have to be built in India with a high degree of technology transfer-the first of the new boats is expected to enter service almost seven years after signing of a contract. A key capability the new submarines will bring is the AIP system that will give the boats the ability to stay underwater for up to two weeks, greatly enhancing stealth.

- The proposal of the L&T in partnership with Spanish Navantia has been rejected by the Ministry for not being compliant with Indian Navy requirements
