Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor Assumes Command of South Western Air Command of the Indian Air Force

In a ceremonial handover steeped in military tradition, Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor officially took command as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) of the South Western Air Command (SWAC) of the Indian Air Force (IAF) today. The transition ceremony took place at SWAC headquarters in Sector 9, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, where he received a Ceremonial Guard of Honour, underscoring the significance of the occasion.

Air Marshal Kapoor succeeds Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari, who has now assumed the role of the 49th Vice Chief of the Air Staff at Air Headquarters in New Delhi. During his tenure as AOC-in-C from May 2023 to April 2025, Tiwari made significant contributions towards enhancing operational preparedness and strategic development within SWAC. A decorated officer, Tiwari’s extensive service history includes notable involvement in HAL Tejas flight testing and a diplomatic role as Air Attaché in France. His commendations include the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (2025), the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (2022), and the Vayu Sena Medal (2008).

Air Marshal Kapoor steps into this pivotal role after serving as the AOC-in-C of the Training Command since May 2024. His impressive background encompasses extensive operational, strategic, and international experience. He has previously commanded a fighter squadron in the Central Sector, led a critical air base in the Western Sector, and served as the Air Defence Commander at SWAC. Kapoor’s career also features high-level staff positions at Air Headquarters, alongside a tenure as Defence Attaché in Pakistan. He has been honored with the Vayu Sena Medal (2008) and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (2022) for his service.

The South Western Air Command, established in 1980, plays a crucial role in overseeing air operations across Rajasthan, Gujarat, and parts of Maharashtra, including Pune. Originally based in Jodhpur, the headquarters was shifted to Gandhinagar in 1998 to facilitate operational expansion. SWAC’s responsibilities extend to air defense and civil coordination, particularly during natural disasters such as floods, demonstrating its integral role in national security and disaster management.

The ceremony not only highlighted the Indian Air Force’s commitment to discipline and tradition but also its pursuit of operational excellence. Notably, the SWAC’s location near the upcoming Chiloda command complex—just 7 km away—indicates ongoing growth in capability and infrastructure for southwestern air operations.

This leadership transition signals a renewed focus on bolstering India’s air defense architecture and enhancing its strategic presence in the region, reaffirming the IAF’s dedication to maintaining robust operational readiness and safeguarding national interests.
