Guru Purnima 2025
- Won Guru Purnima, One Must Delve Into The Meaning Of Its Two Components. The Term “Guru” Is The Remover Of Darkness Or Ignorance. “Purnima” Refers To The Full Moon Day. Thus, Guru Purnima Is The Full Moon Day That Honours Gurus Or Teachers For Their Guidance And Knowledge.
- It Is Also Known As Vyasa Purnima, As It Commemorates The Birth Anniversary Of Maharishi Veda Vyasa, One Of The Greatest Sages In Indian History Who Compiled The Vedas And Authored The Mahabharata.
- Ved Vyasa Revered As The Adi Guru (First Teacher) Of The Hindu Tradition. In Buddhism, It Marks The Day When Lord Buddha Delivered His First Sermon At Sarnath After Attaining Enlightenment — A Foundational Moment In The Spread Of Buddhist Philosophy.
India, Namibia
- India and Namibia signed MoUs in the field of Health and Medicine, and on the setting up of Entrepreneurship Development Center in Namibia and on Cooperation. An announcement on launching of Digital Payments system in Namibia later this year also took place. Letters of acceptance for Namibia’s joining of CDRI and Global Biofuels Alliance have also been presented.
- MoUs have been signed after the delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at the State House in the Namibian capital, Windhoek.
- Addressing the media on the sidelines of the visit, Secretary Economic Relations of Ministry of External Affairs Dammu Ravi said Namibia is the first country in the world where NPCI has done a technology agreement with a central bank for the implementation of UPI like payment system in the country.
- Both the leaders also touched upon the multilateral issues like condemnation of terrorism and reforming of the multilateral institution. Prime Minister Modi also paid tribute to Sam Nujoma, the founding father of the Namibian nation, at the National Memorial Heroes’ Acre in Windhoek. Prime Minister Modi in a social media post said that he reviewed the full range of India-Namibia relations during the talks with Namibian President.
- He said, Cooperation in areas such as digital technology, defence, security, agriculture, healthcare, education and critical minerals figured prominently during discussions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that Africa must not be viewed merely as a source of raw materials, but as a continent that must lead in value creation and sustainable growth.
- Addressing the Namibian Parliament, Mr Modi reiterated India’s strong support for the African Union’s Agenda 2063, particularly its industrialisation goals. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening collaboration in key sectors such as defence and security. Prime Minister Modi also reaffirmed India’s focus on capacity building of African youth and expansion of healthcare infrastructure in Namibia.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Namibia’s highest civilian award, the Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis, in recognition of his contributions to strengthening bilateral ties. This marks the 27th award received by Prime Minister Modi and the 4th during his ongoing tour.
- The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to the Namibian government and people. He said the honour is a testament to the everlasting friendship between India and Namibia. Mr. Modi noted that India and Namibia have stood by each other since the time of their respective freedom struggles.
Smart River Management
- Union Minister of Jal Shakti C.R. Patil chaired a high-level review meeting to discuss Smart River Management under the Namami Gange programme. The meeting focuses on Innovations and International Collaboration for the rejuvenation of rivers.
- The Union Minister commended the collaborative spirit, technological innovation, and scientific depth demonstrated by the teams, including from IIT BHU and IIT Delhi. He emphasised the importance of translating these research outcomes into actionable on-ground interventions. Reiterating the Government’s commitment to “Aviral aur Nirmal Ganga, Mr Patil directed all stakeholders to accelerate implementation and scale these initiatives across critical river systems.
- During the meeting, IIT Delhi presented a roadmap to establish a Centre of Excellence under the IND-RIVERS initiative, being undertaken in collaboration with the National Mission for Clean Ganga and the Government of the Netherlands. Mr Patil was informed that this Centre will not only lead practical research but also serve as a hub for training and incubating startups in the water sector.
- Namami Gange Programme Is An Initiative By The Government Of India To Conserve And Rejuvenate The River Ganga. Launched In June 2014, It Is Designed As An Integrated Conservation Mission, Also Known As The National Mission For Clean Ganga (NMCG). It Addresses The Challenges Faced By The River Through A Multi-faceted Approach.
World’s First Malaria Drug
- Swissmedic, Switzerland’s medical products authority, has granted fast-track approval to Coartem Baby, the first malaria drug designed for infants weighing between 2 to 5 kilograms.
- The drug, developed by Novartis, is a lower-dose version of an existing antimalarial tablet, aimed at providing safe treatment for newborns and small infants, especially in malaria-hit African countries.
- This is only the third time Swissmedic has used its fast-track process in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to improve access to life-saving treatments in developing nations.
Smart Mosquito Surveillance System
- Andhra Pradesh government has launched the Smart Mosquito Surveillance System (SMoSS), an AI-based initiative using sensors, drones, and real-time data to monitor mosquito species, population levels, and environmental conditions.
- The pilot project will be implemented at 66 locations across six major municipal corporations: Visakhapatnam (16 locations), Vijayawada (28), Kakinada (4), Rajamahendravaram (5), Nellore (7), and Kurnool (6).
- When mosquito density crosses safe limits, the system will automatically send alerts, prompting immediate spraying or fogging by civic teams—ensuring targeted action instead of ineffective blind spraying.
- Daily reports from hospitals on diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya will help identify hotspots, while operations will be monitored through mobile apps (Vector Control and Puramitra) and carried out by agencies with performance-based payments.
Gujarat- Rajasthan To Collect Camel Milk
- Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah interacted with women and other workers associated with cooperatives of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan on the occasion of the International Cooperative Year. Mr.Shah also interacted with Miralben Rabari of Camel Breeder Maldhari Cooperative Society of Kutch district.
- During the interaction, Miralben requested to conduct chemical testing of camel milk and conduct research, to which Shri Shah replied that four Ayurvedic companies are testing the medicinal properties of camel milk.
- One of the companies has already completed this work. Mr.Shah added that the Gujarat and Rajasthan governments are jointly formulating a plan to collect milk from camel breeders across the country and use its medicinal properties to get a higher price.
Bulgaria To Join Eurozone
- European Union (EU) finance ministers gave their final approval for Bulgaria to adopt the euro as its official currency starting January 1, 2026. This move will make Bulgaria the 21st member of the eurozone.
- Bulgaria will officially replace its national currency, the lev, with the euro. The fixed conversion rate is set at 1.95583 lev per euro. Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov hailed the decision as a “landmark moment” and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a smooth and effective transition.
- Euro Area, Commonly Called The Eurozone, Is A Currency Union Of 20 Member States Of European Union (EU) That Have Adopted The Euro (€) As Their Primary Currency And Sole Legal Tender, And Have Thus Fully Implemented EMU Policies.
