NSG To Procure Indigenous Ugram

• The National Security Guard (NSG) is set to procure the indigenous Ugram assault rifles chambered in 7.62×51mm NATO calibre in limited quantities.
• The Ugram rifle is a state-of-the-art, fully indigenous weapon developed by the DRDO Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune, in partnership with Hyderabad-based private firm Dvipa Armour India Private Limited.
• This rifle project was completed unusually fast, with five prototypes developed in just 100 days, underscoring the urgency and priority given to indigenous armament solutions.
• Weighing less than 4 kilograms with a 20-round magazine, the rifle balances portability and lethality. The weapon fires the 7.62×51mm cartridge, a NATO-standard round that provides better stopping power and range compared to legacy 5.56mm weapons previously in use by Indian forces.

Indian Army Awards ₹17 Crore Contract To Lokesh Machines

• The Indian Army has awarded a ₹17 crore contract to Hyderabad-based Lokesh Machines, a company currently under US sanctions, for the supply of ‘Mod Kits’ for the 7.62mm Medium Machine Gun (MMG).
• Lokesh Machines, founded in 1983, is a well-established manufacturer of CNC machines and has expanded into small arms manufacturing, notably developing the indigenous submachine gun Asmi for the Indian Army.
• Lokesh Machines earned significant recognition for successfully developing and manufacturing the Asmi submachine gun, which was inducted into the Indian Army earlier this year with a supply of 550 units to the Northern Command.
• This indigenous weapon was designed in collaboration with the Indian Army and the Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE) Pune, eventually outperforming internationally renowned competitors.
• The contract for ‘Mod Kits’ for the 7.62mm MMG signifies ongoing modernization and enhancement of infantry weapons, a crucial element of the Army’s equipment upgrade plans.

India-Russia Signs Agreement To Establish A Modern Wind Tunnel Facility

• India and Russia have entered into a significant bilateral agreement aimed at enhancing aerospace research and manufacturing capabilities in India. The pact focuses primarily on establishing a modernised Wind Tunnel Facility along with the production of Small Aircraft Piston Engines in India.
• This strategic cooperation reflects a deepening of defence and aerospace collaboration between the two countries, targeting technological advancement and self-reliance in aviation sectors.
• Wind tunnels are essential for experimental aerodynamics, allowing researchers and manufacturers to evaluate the performance, stability, and safety of aircraft designs before proceeding to costly prototype stages.
• A wind tunnel enables testing scaled models to understand airflow behaviour, forces, and other critical parameters, thereby reducing development risks and costs.
• The agreement includes setting up manufacturing for Small Aircraft Piston Engines in India. Piston engines are fundamental for powering small aircraft, including trainers, private planes, and light utility aircraft.

Indian Army Inducts Indigenous MMME MK-II

• The Indian Army has officially inducted the indigenously developed Mechanical Minefield Marking Equipment Mark–II (MMME Mk-II) manufactured by BEML Limited.
• This milestone highlights a strategic leap in India’s defence indigenisation and operational competency, reflecting the synergy between the Indian Army, the DRDO and the domestic defence manufacturer BEML under the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative.
• The MMME MK-II is a state-of-the-art, semi-automatic system created to rapidly mark and fence minefields with minimal human involvement—thereby significantly increasing operational safety for military personnel.
• It can mark or fence minefields at a minimum rate of 1.2km/hour, with a standard inter-picket spacing of 15 meters. The inter-picket distance can be adjusted from 10 to 35 meters in 5-meter steps, enabling adaptable field marking as per tactical needs.
• With an order for 56 units finalized earlier this year for 329 crore rupees, this step also demonstrates the government’s continuing commitment to modernize the forces and strengthen indigenous manufacturing capabilities.

Rolls-Royce Mulls Setting up MRO

• Aerospace major Rolls-Royce on Thursday said it is exploring potential opportunities for setting up maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capability in India for the AE2100 engine operated by the Indian Air Force to support and sustain the fleet, aligned with the India-UK free trade pact.
• As the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) comes into effect, Rolls-Royce said it plans to accelerate its aerospace and defence engagement with India.
• Rolls-Royce has joint ventures with Hindustan Aerospace Limited (HAL) and Force Motors, as well as long-standing manufacturing partnerships with organisations like HAL, Tata, Godrej & Boyce and Bharat Forge, among others in India.

Chapters on Field Marshal Manekshaw, Brig Usman, Major Sharma introduced in NCERT syllabus

• Chapters on the lives and legacy of legendary Indian military figures — Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Brigadier Mohammad Usman and Major Somnath Sharma — have been added to the NCERT syllabus for the current academic year.
• The move aims to introduce students to inspirational narratives of courage, duty, and sacrifice, the defence ministry said in a statement.
• Field Marshal Manekshaw, India’s first officer to be conferred the rank of Field Marshal, is remembered for his exceptional leadership and strategic acumen.
• Brigadier Usman and Major Sharma — recipients of the Mahavir Chakra and Param Vir Chakra (posthumously), respectively — laid down their lives in the line of duty and remain enduring symbols of supreme sacrifice, it said.
• According to the ministry, chapters on Field Marshal Manekshaw have been included in Class 8 (Urdu), Brigadier Usman in Class 7 (Urdu), and Major Sharma in Class 8 (English).
