S-400 A Game Changer During Op Sindoor: IAF Chief
- IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh has said that the S-400 missile system proved to be a “game changer” after Pakistan’s escalation during Operation Sindoor, and the range of the system kept their aircraft away.
- The Chief of the Air Staff, who delivered the keynote address at the 16th edition of the Air Chief Marshal LM Katre Memorial Lecture, said India’s air defence systems did a wonderful job during Operation Sindoor.
- “We have at least five fighters confirmed kills and one large aircraft, which could be either an ELINT aircraft or an AEW &C aircraft, which was taken on at a distance of about 300 kilometres. This is actually the largest ever recorded surface-to-air kill that we can talk about,” he said.
- “We were able to get at least two command and control centres…At least six radars, some of them big, some of them small. Two SAGW systems that is in Lahore and Okara. We attacked three hangars. One was the Sukkur UAV hangar, the Bholari hangar and the Jacobabad F-16 hangar.
- We have an indication of at least one AEW&C in that AEW&C hangar and a few F-16s, which were under maintenance there,” he added.
Indian Army, IAF Seek 200 Light Helicopters
- The Defence Ministry has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to replace its fleet of Chetak and Cheetah helicopters with about 200 modern light helicopters classified as Reconnaissance and Surveillance Helicopters (RSH).
- The new helicopters will serve both the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force, with an expected requirement of 120 units for the Army and 80 for the Air Force.
- The RFI aims to finalise technical requirements, decide the procurement method, and identify potential suppliers, including Indian companies partnering with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), who can supply Reconnaissance and Surveillance Helicopters.
- The Cabinet Committee on Security also approved the purchase of 156 Light Combat Helicopters worth over Rs 45,000 crore from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Army and Air Force.
India Pauses Plans To Buy US Weapons
- The Centre has put on hold its plans to procure new US weapons and aircraft, according to three Indian officials familiar with the matter, in India’s first concrete sign of discontent after tariffs imposed on its exports by President Donald Trump dragged ties to their lowest level in decades.
- India had been planning to send Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to Washington in the coming weeks for an announcement on some of the purchases, but that trip has been cancelled, two of the people said.
- Trump on August 6 imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods as punishment for Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil, which he said meant the country was funding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. That raised the total duty on Indian exports to 50 per cent – among the highest of any US trading partner.
- Delhi is the world’s second-largest arms importer and Russia has traditionally been its top supplier. India has in recent years however, shifted to importing from Western powers like France, Israel and the US.
Unlocking UAV Making System
- The ₹30,000 crore deal to supply long-range drones to armed forces which has recently been cleared by the defence ministry is set to unlock the UAV manufacturing ecosystem in the country, with two players set to split the order, creating distinct production lines that can cater for larger orders in the future, besides exports.
- Defence Acquisition Council recently gave the go-ahead to procure 87 medium altitude long endurance (MALE) drones that are to be made indigenously. The drones will carry out tasks such as reconnaissance, electronic warfare and precision missile strikes.
‘Udaygiri’, ‘Himgiri’ to be Simultaneously Commissioned
- Indian naval ships ‘Udaygiri’ and ‘Himgiri’, part of Project 17A stealth frigates, are slated to be simultaneously commissioned on August 26 at Visakhapatnam.
- The first ship of the P17A (Nilgiri Class) stealth frigates ‘Nilgiri’ was commissioned at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January.
- The second warship, Udaygiri, built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), was delivered to the Navy on July 1.
- The Indian Navy is preparing for the simultaneous commissioning of two advanced frontline frigates — ‘Udaygiri’ (F35) and ‘Himgiri’ (F34) — on August 26, a Navy spokesperson said.
- Project 17A is a follow-on to the Shivalik class (Project 17) frigates active in service.
Arab League Council Condemns Israeli Plan To Impose Control Over Gaza
- The Council of the Arab League condemned the Israeli government’s decisions and plans to impose military control over the Gaza Strip and displace its population, affirming that such actions constitute a violation of international law and a threat to Arab and regional security.
- In its closing statement following a meeting of permanent representatives at the League’s headquarters, the Council renewed its call to protect the Palestinian people, prevent the liquidation of their cause, and implement resolutions of Arab summits to break the siege and deliver aid by land, sea, and air in coordination with the United Nations.
