Modi Likely To Be in US Next Month for UNGA Meet
- The ostensible reason is to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York, but a key objective will be to meet US President Donald Trump, iron out the issues on trade and arrive at a common ground on tariffs. This will also give an opportunity for the two leaders to announce a trade deal.
- There has to be movement on two fronts — the Russia-Ukraine war and the Indo-US trade deal.
- Negotiations are underway on both fronts, and the stakes for Delhi are high since it has been slapped with 50 per cent tariffs by the US — 25 per cent for its high tariffs and 25 per cent penalty for buying Russian oil.
- On the Russia-Ukraine war front, Delhi is closely following the meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15 to discuss a resolution to the war in Ukraine.
- Modi has already spoken to Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the last few days. A resolution to the conflict is in India’s interest, sources said, and this has been conveyed to both leaders.
India, Australia Hold 7th Round of Dialogue
- The 7th round of the India-Australia Dialogue on Disarmament, Non-Proliferation, and Export Control was held on August 12, 2025, in New Delhi. This high-level dialogue focused on discussing the latest developments and challenges in various critical areas including nuclear, chemical, and biological disarmament and non-proliferation.
- Both sides also deliberated on outer space security, the role of conventional weapons, including the impact of artificial intelligence in the military domain, and the functioning of multilateral export control regimes.
- The dialogue served as an important platform to enhance mutual understanding and appreciation of the national perspectives and global developments concerning non-proliferation and disarmament. This collaborative engagement contributes significantly to strengthening the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Indian Navy Completes First-Ever Rescue Seat Certification
- The Indian Navy has successfully completed its first-ever Rescue Seat Certification for the South African Navy’s submarine SAS Manthatisi, marking a historic milestone and further strengthening bilateral maritime ties between India and South Africa.
- This achievement is notable as it is the first such certification performed by India for a friendly foreign navy submarine, highlighting the Indian Navy’s expanding capabilities in submarine rescue and safety operations.
- Under this agreement, India is authorized to deploy its Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle to assist South African submarines in emergencies. The certification on the SAS Manthatisi confirms that the Indian DSRVs can properly dock with the submarine’s rescue seat, facilitating effective rescue operations if needed.
Hope Mars Analog Mission
- Two Indian analogue astronauts, Rahul Mogalapalli and Yaman Akot, successfully completed a 10-day mission inside the Himalayan Outpost for Planetary Exploration (HOPE) habitat located in the remote region of Tso Kar, about 150 kilometres from Leh, Ladakh.
- This mission was designed to simulate the stresses and routines of lunar and Martian exploration, marking a significant milestone in India’s human spaceflight ambitions. The HOPE mission, developed by Bengaluru-based Protoplanet in collaboration with ISRO’s Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC), features an 8-meter habitat module named Phobos and a 5-meter utility module named Deimos after Mars’ moons.
- The habitat was engineered to replicate the difficulties of extended space travel. The extreme environmental conditions of the Ladakh region, with temperature fluctuating from 35°C to -25°C, provided an ideal analogue setting for Mars-like conditions.
- This mission is foundational for India’s forthcoming Gaganyaan program, which aims to send astronauts into space and eventually to the Moon by 2040.
- Data and protocols developed during this mission, including mission planning, health monitoring, and adaptation to environmental extremes, are directly applicable to future crewed space missions.
Pentagon Golden Dome to Have 4-Layer Defense System
- The Trump administration’s flagship Golden Dome missile defense system will include four layers — one satellite-based and three on land — with 11 short-range batteries located across the continental U.S., Alaska and Hawaii, according to a U.S. government slide presentation on the project first reported by Reuters.
- The slides, tagged “Go Fast, Think Big!” were presented to 3,000 defense contractors in Huntsville, Alabama, last week and reveal the unprecedented complexity of the system, which faces an ambitious 2028 deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump.
- The system is estimated to cost $175 billion, but the slides show uncertainties still loom over the basic architecture of the project because the number of launchers, interceptors, ground stations, and missile sites needed for the system has yet to be determined.
- “They have a lot of money, but they don’t have a target of what it costs yet,” said one U.S. official. So far Congress has appropriated $25 billion for Golden Dome in Trump’s tax-and-spend bill passed in July. Another $45.3 billion is earmarked for Golden Dome in his 2026 presidential budget request.
