DRDO Unveils Indian Radio Software Architecture (IRSA)

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has launched the Indian Radio Software Architecture (IRSA) — a major step toward achieving self-reliance in defence communication technologies.

According to the Ministry of Defence, IRSA provides a unified software framework for Software Defined Radios (SDRs) used across the Indian Armed Forces. The architecture includes standardised interfaces, APIs, execution environments, and waveform portability mechanisms, ensuring seamless interoperability between different communication systems.

The concept of IRSA was first proposed in 2021, when the growing importance of SDRs in modern warfare was recognised. A core technical team led by DRDO began its development in 2022, collaborating closely with the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) and the three services to align the design with operational and user requirements. This initiative is expected to play a critical role in India’s defence communication modernisation and technological independence.

Indian Army’s Top Commanders Assess Border Security Challenges

Senior commanders of the Indian Army recently conducted a two-day conference to review national security threats along India’s borders with Pakistan and China.

Discussions focused on various aspects of Operation Sindoor and India’s recent decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan — a move made after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. The government had reiterated that “blood and water cannot flow together,” underlining a tougher stance on cross-border terrorism.

The Army Commanders’ Conference serves as a strategic platform for the Army’s top leadership to deliberate on conceptual and operational issues. The conclave aims to set key priorities, review the evolving security landscape, and strengthen the vision for a future-ready Indian Army.

India and Russia Begin Indra-2025 Joint Military Exercise

The Indra-2025 joint military exercise between India and Russia began on October 6, 2025, at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan. The exercise will continue until October 15, focusing on enhancing operational coordination and counterterrorism capabilities.

The Russian Ministry of Defence highlighted that the key objective of Indra-2025 is to practice joint counterterrorism operations, improve interoperability, and refine tactical coordination in complex battle scenarios.

India’s Ministry of Defence emphasised that the exercise not only deepens defence cooperation but also strengthens the strategic partnership between the two nations, reinforcing mutual trust and military camaraderie amid evolving global security challenges.

India Issues NOTAM for Missile Test in Bay of Bengal

India has released a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) for a planned missile test in the Bay of Bengal, scheduled between October 15 and 17, 2025. The designated test zone suggests a missile range of approximately 1,480 kilometers, indicating a mid-range trial.

This development follows the successful Agni-V Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) test in August 2025, which demonstrated India’s 5,000 km long-range strike capability and solidified its credible second-strike deterrence.

The upcoming test is expected to focus on systems within the tactical-to-strategic range bracket, marking another significant step in advancing India’s indigenous missile technology and operational readiness.
