In a significant advancement for both Ukraine’s defense capabilities and the global drone industry, the Ukrainian Defense Industry has formalized a collaborative agreement with US-based LeVanta Tech. This partnership aims to develop an innovative drone technology that combines airborne and maritime functions, effectively creating a platform capable of operating efficiently in both realms.
The centerpiece of this collaboration will be the development of a robust drone derived from LeVanta Tech’s recently unveiled Halia sea-launched aerial drone, which is designed to offer a synthesis of the endurance typical of marine drones along with the speed, agility, and stealth characteristics associated with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Unlike conventional seaplane-style drones, this new technology will be optimized to take off from and land on tumultuous sea conditions, highlighting its versatility and operational range.
LeVanta Tech envisions a comprehensive research and development effort involving Ukrainian engineers, with the crucial phase of testing expected to occur within Ukrainian territory itself. The company is also evaluating the possibility of establishing production facilities in Ukraine, signaling a long-term commitment to the region.
Kelly Eccles, CEO and founder of LeVanta Tech, remarked on the uniqueness of this dual-capability platform, emphasizing the scarcity of drones that can seamlessly transition between flying and floating. He further expressed the company’s optimism about the partnership, noting Ukraine’s expertise in both drone technology and tactical applications, making it a compelling location for development.
The drone, often referred to as the ‘Float-and-Fly’ platform, aims to operate effectively in contested areas by achieving an agile entry through the air, followed by landing on water and functioning as a surface drone. With a reduced radar signature, the drone enhances stealth during operations, a crucial quality in contemporary military applications.
Offering capabilities beyond traditional aerial drones, this multi-role platform can engage in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions while also serving as a communications relay. Its design facilitates rapid egress after mission completion, enhancing operational efficiency.
The Halia series showcases three different models tailored for versatility across various operational needs. The Halia-S, the smallest in the lineup, is battery-powered, while the Halia-M utilizes a hybrid-electric system. The largest, Halia-X, employs jet fuel, allowing for extended operational ranges and versatile applications. The operational distance of these drones varies, with the smaller models achieving up to 250 miles (402 kilometers) and the Halia-X capable of reaching an impressive 3,000 miles (4,828 kilometers).
With operational speeds ranging from 100 to 150 knots, these drones also boast significant payload capabilities. The Halia-S and Halia-M can carry between 50 to 100 pounds (23 to 46 kilograms), while the more robust Halia-X is designed to support payloads of up to 2,200 pounds (998 kilograms).
This strategic collaboration marks a pivotal moment for Ukraine’s defense sector, as it not only develops advanced technology but also reinforces the potential for international partnerships in military innovation.
