76th Territorial Army Day: Celebrating the Spirit of Citizen Soldiers
The 76th Territorial Army Day was observed on 9 October, honouring the contributions of the Territorial Army (TA) — India’s vital reserve force that supports the regular Army. The TA comprises volunteers trained to assist during national emergencies, natural disasters, and internal security duties.
According to a notification issued on May 6 under Rule 33 of the Territorial Army Rules, 1948, the Government of India has empowered the Chief of the Army Staff to summon any officer or enrolled personnel of the Territorial Army when required, either for security tasks or full-time service. Presently, the TA operates with 32 Infantry Battalions across the nation.
Notably, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, who was granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2009, recently received the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card for his remarkable social service and close association with the Armed Forces. Several other renowned personalities have also served in the TA, including Nana Patekar, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Abhinav Bindra, Anurag Thakur, and Sachin Pilot.
Indian Army Introduces SAKSHAM Counter-Drone System
To strengthen its anti-drone capabilities, the Indian Army has expedited the procurement of an indigenous counter-drone network called SAKSHAM — short for Situational Awareness for Kinetic Soft and Hard Kill Assets Management. Developed in partnership with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), SAKSHAM will function over the Army Data Network (ADN) to deliver real-time drone situational awareness to all field formations.
This cutting-edge system supports both soft and hard kill options, ensuring immediate responses to aerial threats. Officials highlighted that SAKSHAM is a step towards the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision in defence technology. Approved under the Fast Track Procurement (FTP) category, it is scheduled for deployment within a year.
Once operational, SAKSHAM will become the core of India’s Counter-UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) grid, integrating seamlessly with the nation’s air defence and surveillance infrastructure for enhanced security in sensitive areas.
Indian Army to Revise Physical Fitness Norms
In a bid to boost combat readiness, the Indian Army has decided to restructure its physical fitness standards for all ranks — from Agniveers to senior officers. As per the new norms, personnel will now be required to clear combined physical fitness tests twice annually.
Previously, soldiers and officers up to the age of 50 had to clear two separate tests — the Battle Physical Efficiency Test (BPET) and the Physical Proficiency Test (PPT). Senior officers above that age were exempt. However, under the revised system effective from April 1, 2026, the upper age limit has been extended to 60 years, bringing more officers under the same evaluation framework.
Additionally, horizontal and vertical rope exercises will apply for personnel below 45 years of age, ensuring age-appropriate physical assessment standards.
UK and India Seal $468 Million Defence Agreement
In a significant boost to bilateral defence cooperation, the United Kingdom and India have signed a £350 million ($468 million) deal for the supply of Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMMs) to the Indian Army. The missiles, produced by Thales in Northern Ireland, will support 700 jobs at the manufacturing facility, which also produces weapons for Ukraine.
The agreement was finalized during UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to Mumbai, where he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic and defence partnerships under a broader India-UK strategic framework.
Starmer has been advocating for a stronger British defence industry to spur economic growth and meet NATO spending targets. The two nations also signed an additional £250 million deal to co-develop electric-powered naval engines, marking a new milestone in maritime defence collaboration.
