India-Afghanistan Agree to Form Trade Committee

India and Afghanistan have agreed to establish a joint trade committee to strengthen economic and investment ties between the two nations. The decision was announced by Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister, Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, who emphasized the vast opportunities available in Afghanistan’s mineral and energy sectors. He invited Indian businesses to explore these areas for potential collaboration.

Muttaqi also shared that his meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, covered various topics including economic, political, diplomatic, regional, and security issues. He mentioned that India plans to upgrade its technical presence in Kabul and that a diplomatic delegation from the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan would soon visit New Delhi.

Both sides agreed to expand the air corridor to boost bilateral trade. Dr. Jaishankar also assured India’s continued support in the healthcare sector and aid for earthquake victims in Afghanistan. During the meeting, Jaishankar handed over five ambulances to the Afghan Foreign Minister as part of India’s goodwill gesture, fulfilling a promise of gifting 20 ambulances in total.

US Denies Reports of Supplying New AMRAAM Missiles to Pakistan

The United States has dismissed media reports suggesting that Pakistan would receive new Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs). The US government clarified that the recently modified defence contract only covers maintenance and spare parts support, not the delivery of new missiles.

The clarification stated that “no part of the contract involves new AMRAAM deliveries or upgrades” and that it does not enhance Pakistan’s current capabilities. It is worth noting that Pakistan had purchased around 700 AMRAAM missiles in 2007 for its F-16 fighter jets, which was one of the largest international missile orders at that time.
