India to Procure 80 Medium Transport Aircraft
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is gearing up to launch the long-pending procurement project for up to 80 Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) for the Indian Air Force (IAF). This massive multi-billion-dollar program is among the largest global tenders in the transport aircraft category and aims to significantly upgrade India’s strategic and tactical airlift capabilities in the coming decade.
The new aircraft are intended to replace the Soviet-era An-32 fleet, which has served the IAF for over forty years but is now reaching the end of its service life. Three leading international aerospace companies are expected to compete for this high-value contract — Lockheed Martin’s C-130J Super Hercules (USA), Embraer’s KC-390 Millennium (Brazil), and Airbus Defence & Space’s A400M Atlas (Europe). Each aircraft offers distinct advantages in terms of payload capacity, endurance, and operational versatility, aligning with the IAF’s diverse mission requirements.
The C-130J Super Hercules, already in service with 12 units in the IAF, has proven its performance in battlefield transport, humanitarian missions, and special operations. Its familiarity with existing maintenance infrastructure gives it an operational edge. Industry analysts estimate the MTA project’s value at $6–8 billion, factoring in configuration, technology transfer, and localisation. Evaluation will focus on lifecycle cost, operational performance, and industrial participation, consistent with the government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ objectives to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing.
Gridbots Unveils HAWK BD
Ahmedabad-based defence robotics company Gridbots has launched HAWK BD, a fully indigenous Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) robot aimed at boosting India’s capabilities in handling Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and hazardous materials.
The HAWK BD features a modular and semi-autonomous design, catering to the operational demands of the armed forces, paramilitary units, and law enforcement agencies engaged in high-risk bomb disposal and reconnaissance missions. Built as a multi-mission unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), it can conduct EOD, IED neutralisation, and hazardous substance inspection operations — all while keeping human operators at a safe distance.
Its rugged chassis and independent drive system enable stable mobility across rough terrains, rubble, and tight urban spaces. The system also incorporates high-definition day and night cameras, thermal imaging sensors, and a 360° visual awareness suite, providing real-time situational monitoring even in low-visibility or nighttime conditions. This comprehensive sensory setup ensures operators maintain maximum situational awareness while operating from a secure distance.
Exercise Mitra Shakti 2025
India and Sri Lanka have commenced the 11th edition of Exercise Mitra Shakti in Belagavi, Karnataka, aimed at enhancing interoperability and joint operational readiness between the two nations. The two-week military exercise focuses on coordinated responses to counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations.
The Indian Army’s Rajput Regiment represents the 170-member Indian contingent, while 135 soldiers from Sri Lanka’s Gajaba Regiment form the core of their participation. Additionally, 20 personnel from the Indian Air Force (IAF) and 10 from the Sri Lankan Air Force are involved in the exercise.
Both sides are conducting tactical training, including raid operations, search-and-destroy missions, and heliborne assaults, supported by drone and counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) technologies. The exercise is a cornerstone of Indo–Sri Lankan defence cooperation, reflecting shared regional security interests and commitment to counter-terrorism efforts.
India–Armenia Defence Partnership Nears $4 Billion Deal
India and Armenia are nearing the finalisation of defence agreements valued between $3.5–4 billion, marking a major step forward in bilateral defence collaboration. The agreements are focused on strengthening Armenia’s air defence, missile, and artillery systems, driven by growing regional security challenges.
A central element of the deal involves the integration of Akash-NG (Next Generation), a medium-range surface-to-air missile developed by DRDO and produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL). This system is expected to play a key role in establishing a layered air defence network for Armenia, offering protection against aircraft, drones, and precision-guided munitions.
Parallel discussions are also underway regarding co-production of BrahMos missile components in Armenia. The proposed collaboration would enable Armenia to develop its own industrial base for supersonic cruise missile manufacturing, with potential for shared production lines and assembly units. This initiative underscores India’s growing role as a global defence exporter and strategic partner in Eurasia.
