India Signs a Milestone LPG Import Agreement with the United States
In a major energy development, India has finalized its first structured agreement to import liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the United States. Beginning in 2026, India will procure 2.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) — around 10% of its total LPG imports.
This strategic contract aims to diversify India’s supply base and strengthen trade relations with the United States. Currently, India imports over 60% of its LPG needs, primarily from West Asian nations such as Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar.
The 2026 agreement involves public-sector oil companies IOC, BPCL, and HPCL, which will jointly source LPG from major US suppliers including Chevron, Phillips 66, and TotalEnergies. Supplies will originate from the US Gulf Coast and be priced based on the Mont Belvieu benchmark.
