INS Aridaman, Close To Joining Fleet

  • The Indian Navy is preparing to commission INS Aridaman, the country’s third indigenously built nuclear ballistic submarine, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi announced on Tuesday. He described the submarine’s upcoming induction as a significant milestone in strengthening India’s underwater deterrence and expanding the Navy’s long-term strategic capabilities.
  • Admiral Tripathi also confirmed that the Navy expects to receive its first batch of four Rafale Marine fighter jets by 2029. India signed the contract for 26 Rafale aircraft on 25 April, which includes five years of performance-based logistics support. The aircraft will eventually operate from India’s aircraft carriers, enhancing the Navy’s air-combat reach in the Indian Ocean.
  • The Navy Chief outlined the progress made since December 2024, stating that the service has received “acceptance of necessity” for 94 capital acquisition cases worth approximately Rs 1,27,554 crore. These approvals include plans for 47 ships and 120 fast interceptor craft, aimed at improving coastal security and expanding the fleet.
  • He added that contracts for 83 capital cases worth about Rs 84,762 crore have already been signed, including 46 emergency procurement deals valued at Rs 7,000 crore. These fast-track purchases are intended to meet operational requirements without delay.

Maritime Capability Perspective Plan Target to 2032

  • The Indian Navy has rescheduled its MCPP to a 2032 deadline, as it was unable to achieve the goals due to various constraints, a senior Navy official said.
  • Responding to a query during a press conference organised ahead of the Navy Day celebrations here, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command, Vice Admiral Sameer Saxena, described it as an aspirational plan formulated in one year that looked ten years ahead.
  • The Maritime Capability Perspective Plan (MCPP) is the Indian Navy’s long-term blueprint for building and modernising its force structure to meet future operational and strategic requirements.
  • Saxena said the discussions for India’s second indigenous aircraft carrier are being held at the ‘highest levels’, but no concrete plan has been approved as of now.
  • He said the Indian Navy has so far achieved 90 per cent of the float component in ship building, 60 per cent in its movement component and 50 per cent in the attack segment.
  • “We are constantly trying to achieve indigenisation, and we will achieve 100 per cent indigenisation by 2047,” he added.
  • Talking about China’s growing influence in the Indian Ocean region, Saxena said India is not concerned about Chinese presence but is alert about the opacity in which they operate.

Test Of Fighter Ejection System at 800 km/h

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Tuesday successfully carried out a high-speed rocket-sled test of a fighter aircraft escape system at the Rail Track Rocket Sled (RTRS) facility of the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) in Chandigarh.
  • The test achieved a controlled velocity of 800 km/h, validating canopy severance, ejection sequencing and full aircrew recovery. It was conducted in collaboration with the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
  • According to the Ministry of Defence, “This complex dynamic test places India in an elite club of nations with advanced in-house escape system testing capability.”
  • Dynamic ejection tests are significantly more demanding than static evaluations such as net tests or zero-zero tests, which assess pilot ejection from a stationary aircraft. Unlike static tests, dynamic trials replicate real-world performance of ejection seats and crew-escape systems at high speeds. These trials are considered a key benchmark for canopy-severance mechanisms and pilot-rescue aids.
  • DRDO established the four-kilometre Rail Track Rocket Sled Penta Rail Supersonic Track at TBRL in 2014. The national test facility is among only a handful of its kind globally. It supports testing of critical systems including payloads for ISRO’s manned missions, navigation systems for missiles and aircraft, proximity fuses, armament-system fuses, parachutes for payload delivery and arrester systems for aircraft.

If Europe wants war with Russia, ‘we are ready’: Putin

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that Russia was “ready” for war if Europe seeks one, accusing the continent’s leaders of trying to sabotage a deal on the Ukraine conflict before he met with US envoys.
  • The comments came as US envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner were in Moscow for high-stakes talks on ending the nearly four-year war, which were preceded by days of intense diplomacy.”We are not planning to go to war with Europe, but if Europe wants to and starts, we are ready right now,” Putin told reporters in Moscow.
  • “They have no peaceful agenda, they are on the side of war,” he added, repeating his claim that European leaders were hindering US attempts to broker peace in Ukraine. He added that European changes to Trump’s latest plan to end the war “aimed solely at one thing — to completely block the entire peace process and put forward demands that are absolutely unacceptable for Russia”.
  • Washington has presented a 28-point draft to end the conflict, later amended after criticism from Kyiv and Europe, which viewed it as heeding to many of Russia’s maximalist demands.

JSW, Shield AI Plan $90-m Drone Manufacturing Unit

  • As part of the pact with the American company, JSW will be producing Shield’s Group 3 unmanned aerial systems- V-BAT-at a new facility in Hyderabad through technology transfer under a long-term licensing arrangement.
  • JSW Group is investing $90 million (₹809 crore) to manufacture military drones in India in partnership with US-based Shield AI.
  • The project is aligned with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision and reflects a maturing ecosystem for indigenous defence capabilities. Expected to be operational by the last quarter of 2026, the facility will also create a domestic supply chain, workforce training systems, and a sustainable infrastructure for MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) services related to unmanned systems.
  • The VBAT platform, with its patented ducted design, is capable of vertical take-off and long-endurance missions. It supports a broad range of ISR functionalities, from reconnaissance over hostile terrains to direct battlefield deployment with front-line units. Its compact logistics footprint makes it suitable for rapid deployment in diverse environments, adding versatility to India’s defence toolkit.
  • Mr. Sarjan Shah, Shield AI’s Managing Director for India, highlighted the strategic importance of this initiative. “Shield AI is proud to be working alongside JSW in creating an indigenous production ecosystem for the V-BAT. The establishment of this world-class facility sets in motion the joint vision of the JSW Group and Shield AI to deepen Indo–US defence collaboration built on trust, transparency and shared strategic priorities.”
