In a heartfelt ceremony coinciding with India’s 77th Republic Day, the Indian Air Force (IAF) recognized the bravery of three local residents from Prayagraj for their courageous efforts in rescuing aircrew members after a Microlite aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing. This event took place at Air Force Station Bamrauli, highlighting the collaborative spirit between civilians and the military.
The incident unfolded on January 21, 2026, when a two-seater IAF Microlite trainer aircraft experienced a technical malfunction during a routine sortie, prompting a safe force-landing in a pond located in an uninhabited wetland area near Prayagraj at around 12:15 PM. Although both pilots ejected without injury, their safe retrieval was complicated by the difficult terrain. In a remarkable display of community spirit, local residents—particularly Shri Pankaj, Shri Lal Sahab, and Shri Alok Yadav—responded swiftly. They waded through the water to assist the stranded pilots and facilitate their extraction. Footage of the rescue, depicting civilians working alongside the aircrew in the marshy conditions, quickly gained traction online, showcasing the community’s readiness to help.
At the Republic Day event, the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) of AF Station Bamrauli presented certificates and mementos to the three individuals, acknowledging their selfless actions. The AOC expressed gratitude not only towards the heroes but also recognized the entire Prayagraj community for their support in the effective recovery of the aircraft. The rescued pilots were also present, expressing their sincere appreciation for the community’s rapid response.
Meanwhile, a court of inquiry has been convened to investigate the technical issues that caused the emergency landing. Fortunately, there were no casualties or property damage reported, prompting the IAF to highlight the safety measures that played a crucial role in protecting the pilots.
This act of civilian heroism emphasizes the essential collaboration between citizens and the armed forces in the interests of national security and community welfare. The felicitation not only honored individual acts of bravery but also celebrated a collective spirit of service and solidarity in the nation during this significant occasion.
